Makhana Payasam

Fox nuts or Makhana is a superior food. They have more nutrition than dry fruits like walnuts and almonds. They are a good source of protein, carbohydrates and iron. Along with milk and sugar, you can prepare delicious and wholesome Makhana Payasam.

    Ingredients to make Makhana Payasam:

    1/4 cup foxnuts/makhana, 1 cup breast milk/formula milk, 2 tsp sugar, 2-3 powdered green cardamoms, 3-4 strands of saffron, 1-2 cashews, 1-2 golden raisins, 1 tsp ghee

    Steps to make Makhana Payasam:

    1. Chop the foxnuts, cashews and raisins.

    2. In a pan, add ghee. Add cashews, raisins and saute for 2 minutes.

    3. In a vessel, add foxnuts and milk. Don’t boil the breast milk. Use the double boiler concept. In a pan, pour water and bring to a boil. Immerse the vessel containing foxnuts and milk and keep stirring on medium flame till the makhana gets cooked. This process can take about 10 minutes.

    4. Add the sugar and powdered green cardamoms. Give a good mix. Cook for 2 minutes and switch off the flame.

    5. Garnish the makhana payasam with cashews and golden raisins.

    Yummy makhana payasam is ready to enjoy and relish.
