Jammu and Kashmir: An Overview

Jammu and Kashmir is a union territory with varied cultures and traditions. Apart from the jaw-dropping landscapes, it is also known for some unique festivals and fairs. The prominent festivals of this UT include Baisakhi, Tulip Festival, Shikara Festival and Gurez Festival. These festivals also attract a lot of tourists as one can witness the regional traditions.

  • The Sikh community in Jammu celebrates the Baisakhi Festival. It marks the beginning of the new year and the start of the harvesting season. Apart from that, it also commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth of Guru Gobind Singh’s warriors in 1699.

  • Tulip Festival is celebrated in the spring season when Tulips across Kashmir flourish in abundance. Srinagar is the focal point of this festival as it is home to Asia’s largest Tulip Garden. During this festival, you can witness a variety of tulips, local handlooms, delicacies and cultural activities.

  • Shikaras are the boats used by Kashmiris in the Dal Lake to give a tour of the place to tourists. During the festival, the boats are decorated with paint. Other highlights of this festival are the Shikara Boat Race and Dragon Boat Race.

  • The Gurez Festival is celebrated in Gurez, located around 120 km from Kashmir, which is at an altitude of 8,000 feet above sea level. The people of Gurez showcase their handicrafts, local delicacies and culture during this festival.
