There are multiple reasons why there might be a time when even ardent bike lovers have to stay away from their much-loved two-wheelers. It might be a long vacation, heavy rains, or preference for a car or other modes of transport.
There might be those who are not too attached with their bikes. They might simply let the bike rest in their building’s parking or their garage and not start the bike for ages. Whatever your reason for staying away from the bike, not starting it for a long period of time can have negative consequences. Thus, it is always suggested to at least start the bike at frequent intervals even if you are not riding it.
In case you belong to the category of people who have stayed away from inserting the key in their bike for a long time, read ahead for some crucial pointers that might prove helpful while starting the bike.

Yes, just as a mobile handset or a laptop takes some time to respond after it is restarted, your bike can also take time to hit full throttle if it has been at rest for a considerable amount of time. Here are some things that you must look at if your bike has not been started for a long time.
It is quite possible that the bike’s battery might be unresponsive. Bad battery means your bike will not start. Even if starts, it might not perform optimally. In such a scenario, you must get the bike’s battery checked. It might work after recharging. If it doesn’t, then there is no option but to buy a new one. Make sure to buy a battery from a reputed company; usually branded batteries come with a year’s warranty.
Depending upon the time period for which the bike was not in use and the prevailing weather conditions at that time, the bike can rust. Rusting is a big problem when it comes to a bike, especially the fuel tank, engine, etc. Rusting is not only superficial; it can happen on the inside as well. Get it checked from a trusted mechanic at the earliest.
Bike’s engine oil needs to be changed frequently for a smooth ride. The chain also needs to be lubricated and the air filter requires cleaning. A bike that has been in the garage for a while might face issues with respect to the above-mentioned fluids. Replenish the fluids to revive your bike.
A lot of times, there might not be a major issue but the basics can be a problem. For example, there is a possibility that rodents might have chewed off some of the bike’s wires. There can be a problem with the brakes. Faulty indicators are also a possibility.
Every bike rider should have the following up-to-date documents; Driving License, Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC) and Bike Insurance. While a Driving License has a long-term validity, PUC and Bike Insurance are valid for a relatively shorter period. Thus, make it a point to renew these necessary documents if they are expired or be ready to be penalized. For example, riding a two-wheeler without a valid bike insurance policy is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act.
