While you know that a bike insurance policy is mandatory as per the Indian traffic laws, what many of you don’t know are the coverages and features of the policy. Many of you buy bike insurance online only to satisfy the legal requirement without considering the coverage offered.
This is a mistake. If you don’t know what your bike insurance policy covers or does not cover, you wouldn’t be able to make a claim. So, knowing the inclusions and exclusions of your bike insurance policy is necessary. Here are seven important things which you should know about your new bike insurance plan’s inclusions and exclusions:
Contents
There are two types of bike insurance plans – third-party liability plans and comprehensive plans. The coverage you get depends on the type of plan you select. Third-party plans cover only third-party liabilities. This means that if you injure or kill another individual or damage someone else’s property, the plan would bear the financial liability you face. Comprehensive plans, on the other hand, cover third-party liability as well as the damages that your bike would suffer in an accident. Thus, they have a wider scope of coverage.
If you buy a comprehensive bike insurance policy, you get coverage against natural as well as man-made disasters which may damage your bike. Thus, any damages suffered by the bike due to earthquakes, floods, lightning, explosion, etc. would be covered in the comprehensive policy. Moreover, if the bike is damaged when it is being transported by rail, road, water or air, such damages would also be covered by the policy.
If the two-wheeler is stolen, the financial loss suffered is covered under comprehensive plans. In such cases, the insurer pays the Insured Declared Value of the policy as the claim amount.
All comprehensive and third-party policies have an inbuilt personal accident cover for the owner/driver of the bike. The cover pays a lump sum benefit in case of accidental death or disability.
Coverage under two wheeler insurance policies come with limits. In case of third-party claims, property damage is covered up to a maximum of INR 7.5 lakhs. However, in case of death of any third party, there are no limits. The claim would depend on the ruling of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. In case of own damage claims, the maximum coverage liability is the Insured Declared Value of the policy. Claims beyond the IDV would not be paid even if the repair costs exceed the IDV.
When it comes to exclusions, the list is almost similar across all plans whether you buy new bike insurance or renew two wheeler insurance. Some common exclusions include drunk driving, driving without a license, deliberate accidents, consequential losses, driving outside India, etc.
Two wheeler insurance policies come with a fixed tenure. Once the tenure is over, you are required to renew the coverage. If you do not renew two wheeler insurance within the due date, the policy lapses. When the policy lapses, the coverage stops. If you suffer an accident and make a claim on a lapsed policy, your claim would be rejected. That is why the renewal of bike insurance online is important to avail continuous coverage.
So, know these inclusions and exclusions of your policy before you buy bike insurance online. When you know the exact coverage, it would become easier for you to raise a claim and have it settled easily.
