Previously, we used to store physical documents such as the car insurance policy, Driving Licence, etc. in our wallets or physical files. While this was the norm, it had its disadvantages. The documents could be misplaced or even lost.
To eliminate the disadvantages of storing documents physically, the DigiLocker helps you store digital documents and certificates. Here are some of the important things you should know about DigiLocker car insurance.

Here are the steps to fetch or add car insurance in DigiLocker.
Step 1: Log into your account on the DigiLocker website (https://digilocker.gov.in/) using your mobile number/Aadhaar number/username (Your DigiLocker account is created through your mobile or Aadhaar number).
Step 2: Select ‘Get the document’ or ‘Banking and Insurance’.
Step 3: Choose ‘Acko General Insurance Ltd.’ and click on ‘Two-wheeler’.
Step 4: Enter your ACKO car insurance policy number and mobile number registered with us.
Step 5: DigiLocker will fetch your car insurance policy document in PDF and is saved automatically to your account.
You can access your digital car insurance policy in the ‘Issued Document’ section.
Step 1: Download the DigiLocker mobile app and create your account by using your Aadhaar or mobile number.
Step 2: Select the option ‘Banking and Insurance’.
Step 3: Click on ‘Acko General Insurance Ltd.’ and click on ‘Two-wheeler’.
Step 4: Enter your car insurance policy number and mobile number.
Step 5: DigiLocker will fetch and store your document in digital format in your account.
You can access your digital car insurance document at any time from the ‘Issued Documents’ section in the DigiLocker app.

Following is the list of car insurance documents you must carry while driving on Indian roads.
Car Registration Certificate (RC): A valid RC must be carried at all times as it allows you to drive four-wheelers legally on Indian roads.
Car Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate: The PUC document certifies that your car’s emission is under the required limit and is not more than what is stated by the authorities.
Car Insurance Policy: Every car owner must possess a valid car insurance policy to drive on Indian roads as per The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Driving Licence (DL): Driving a car on Indian roads without a valid DL is a punishable offence under The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

No, you need not carry the physical hard copy of the document. As per the IT Act, a digital car insurance policy stored in DigiLocker is considered at par with the physical hard copy of the document.
The process remains the same for new and renewed car insurance policies. Access your account on the DigiLocker website or mobile app to provide a few details of the policy to fetch the new policy document. You can access the DigiLocker vehicle insurance in the ‘Issued Documents’ section.
