Hyderabad is a city soaked in history and culture and has plenty to offer. From the majestic ruins of the Golkonda fort to various palaces scattered across the city and scenic lakes.
If you want the independence to explore the city with your own private vehicle, you will need to have a Driving Licence in Hyderabad. The Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 mandates that anyone in the country needs to have a valid Driving Licence to be able to drive or ride a vehicle in the country.

The Learner's Licence is the first step in obtaining a Hyderabad Driving Licence. This licence is issued to enable an applicant to learn how to drive either from an experienced permanent DL holder you know personally or from a licenced driving school.
A Learner's Licence is issued for a period of 6 months and can be extended by another 6 months if required.
Important points to note:
A Learner's Licence is not issued online in Hyderabad. The applicant has to appear personally before the licensing authority to apply for one.
You can only drive with a Learner's Licence when a person holding a permanent driver's licence is present in the vehicle.
Applicants who want to apply for a Learner's Licence will have to carry the following documents with them:
Documents to verify Proof of Age and Proof of Residence
Form 1A (If a medical certificate is applicable)
Form 1 (Declaration if applying for a medical certificate)

If you are applying for a Transport Vehicle Licence, you must hold a Permanent Driving Licence for light motor vehicles for at least a year. You should also be a minimum of 20 years of age and have a Medical Certificate (Form 1A).
To be issued a Learner's Licence, you will have to pass an exam that tests your knowledge about traffic signs and driver responsibilities. You will also have to pay a fee of Rs 150 per class of vehicle while applying for the Learner's Licence.
Once you are confident enough and feel that you can pass the driving test to get your permanent Driving Licence in Hyderabad, you can follow the below steps to initiate the process.
Schedule an appointment from the Telangana Government AOS portal. (This is mandatory as manual applications are not allowed.)
Enter all the details requested and select the test centre nearest to you.
Once your slot is booked, reach the RTO office as scheduled with all the necessary documentation.
Once your documents are verified, you will be asked to pay the relevant fees.
You will then be asked to undertake the driving test which will be conducted by the competent authority. (Please note that you will have to bring your own vehicle for the test)
If the officer is satisfied with your test, you will get your Driving Licence, which will be sent to your address via speed post.
Here are the eligibility criteria for the Hyderabad driving licence.
At 16, you are eligible to get a licence for motorcycles whose engine capacity does not exceed 50 cc.
At 18, you are eligible to get a licence for all motorcycles and cars.
If you want to drive commercial vehicles, you will have to wait till you are 20 years of age.
Obtaining a licence is a two-step process. You will first need to get a learner's permit and learn to drive using that, and then you need to pass a test to get your permanent driver's licence.

You will have to carry the following documents when you go to get your permanent Driving Licence:

Form 5 in the case of Transport Licence
You will have to pay the necessary fees as specified in Rule 32 of the CMV.
You can renew your Driving Licence within 30 days of your permanent licence date of expiry.
Generally, in Telangana, a transport licence is valid only for 3 years. On the other hand, for non-transport vehicles, a licence is valid for 5 years or till the licence holder turns 50.
You can apply for renewal of your Hyderabad Driving Licence by following the below steps.
Schedule an appointment from the Telangana Government AOS portal.
Reach the RTO as scheduled with all relevant documents.
Once your documents are verified, you will be asked to pay the fees as specified in Rule 32 of the CMV.
Your renewed DL will be sent to your address via speed post.

You can request a duplicate Drivers Licence in the event your permanent DL has been damaged or misplaced.
You just have to visit the RTO with all the relevant documents, pay the fee once the documents are verified, and your duplicate DL will be sent to your address via post.

An international driver's licence allows you to drive in certain countries that recognize the Indian International DL as a valid document. To apply for an international driving licence in Hyderabad, you will have to follow the below steps.
Schedule an appointment from the Telangana Government AOS portal. (Note: You must select the Licencing authority where the permanent licence was obtained or last renewed)
Reach the RTO office as scheduled with all the necessary documentation.
Get your documents verified and pay the necessary fees.
You will receive your International Driving Licence on the same day.
Copies of your Passport and the original for verification.
Copies of your permanent DL and the original for verification.

No, you cannot obtain a permanent driving licence in Hyderabad without first passing a driving test. You will be issued a DL only if the officer conducting your test is satisfied with your driving abilities.
A Non-Transport Hyderabad Driving Licence is valid for 20 years or until the holder reaches the age of 50, whichever comes first. After that, you must renew your licence every 5 years.
For Transport Vehicle Licence, the validity is three years from the date the licence was last renewed or issued.
No need to be concerned if you fail a test. After 7 days from the date of your previous test, you can schedule a retest appointment. However, if you fail the driving test three times in a row, you will only be allowed to retake it 60 days after the last test.
Your International Driving Permit is valid for one year from the date of issue or until the validity of your Permanent DL or VISA expires, whichever comes first.
When applying for an IDP, you must pay the following fees.
