Telangana is one of the newly formed states in India. It is known for its age-old royal culture and forts. At the same time, the capital city, Hyderabad, is one of the top technology industry centres in the country. The rise of the IT industry has intensified the population growth in the state, resulting in more vehicles on the roads.
Note that holding a Driving Licence (DL) is a legal obligation when it comes to riding or driving a vehicle in Telangana. If you fail to do so, Telangana e-challan will be issued in your name. Riding or driving without a DL means you are not following the law, which may lead to hefty fines. To avoid that, read on to know how to apply for a Driving Licence in Telangana before you start riding/driving a vehicle.

In Telangana, you can choose to apply for the following kinds of Driving Licences.

The government enables you to complete the DL application process in Telangana via online and offline methods. Read ahead to understand the steps involved in both modes of application.
Follow these steps to apply for a Driving Licence online in Telangana.
Step 1: Visit the official transport portal offered by the Government of Telangana State.
Step 2: Click on the “Learner’s Licence” option mentioned under the “Licence” tab.
Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and select “Click here for Learner Licence Slot”.
Step 4: Agree to the terms and fill in the requested details, make payment, and book your LL slot.
Step 5: Take the test to get your Learner Licence and practice your driving skills for a month.
Step 6: Go back to the Telangana Transport portal and apply for a “Permanent Licence” as an LL-holding applicant.
Step 7: Submit documents and pay the fees to get a slot for the driving competence test.
Step 8: Take a print of the application receipt and carry it with you to the RTO on the date of your driving competence test.
Step 9: Satisfy the RTO inspector with your driving skills and finish the biometric submission process.
Upon verification, the RTO will post your DL in a couple of days.
Follow these instructions to apply for DL offline in Telangana.
Step 1: Collect the documents required for the LL application and visit your local Telangana RTO (Regional Transport Office).
Step 2: Request an application form for Learner’s Licence and fill it up accurately.
Step 3: Submit your application along with other documents and pay the relevant amount to get your receipt and application number.
Step 4: Take the preliminary test to obtain LL and complete your DL application process at the RTO.
Step 5: You will receive a DL application ID, payment receipt and a slot for your driving competence test.
Step 6: Appear for the driving skill test and follow the instructions of the RTO official.
If you clear the test successfully, the RTO will speed post or courier the Driving Licence to your address in a couple of days.
This is how you can view the status of your DL application in Telangana.
Step 1: Visit the official Sarathi website and choose your state “Telangana”.
Step 2: On the home page, you will find the button for “Application Status”.
Step 3: Upon clicking on the option, you can fill in the application number and other requested information.
Step 4: Hit “Submit” to have a look at the status of your DL application.
Here are the key factors you must remember about the procedure of a driving test in Telangana.
The driving competence test is conducted by an inspector appointed by the RTO.
The procedure can differ based on the class of vehicle mentioned in the DL application.
A candidate must show his/her ability to drive/ride a vehicle while following traffic regulations.
In case of failing the test, one can re-apply for the same after 7 days.

Step 2: Fill in your online application under “Apply for Driving Licence renewal” and submit the documents and payments.

Here are the steps involved in the process of getting a duplicate DL in Telangana.
Step 1: Visit the Sarathi website to fill out an online application for DL duplication and print the receipt.
Step 2: Go to the city RTO in your area with the documents and the receipt for verification.
Step 3: Wait for the new DL to be sent via post to your residential address.
Important: The RTO won’t accept a duplicate licence application after 180 days of loss/theft of the original document.
To obtain an International Driving Permit in Telangana, you will need the following.

Step 1: Go to the Sarathi Parivahan platform.
Step 2: Follow the instructions under the “Apply for IDP” section for application submission, then download the acknowledgement slip.
Step 3: Visit the RTO in your area for the process of verification.
The officials will post the International Driving Permit upon successful process completion and verification.
