The Motor Vehicles Act states that an individual must possess a valid Driving Licence (DL) to drive a vehicle. Similarly, renewing the DL before expiry is also essential as it comes with limited validity.

Here are the steps for Driving Licence renewal online in AP (Andhra Pradesh).
Step 1: Log on to the official RTO website (Parivahan) to access online services.
Step 2: Select “DL Related Services” from the Online Services menu.
Step 3: Choose the state name (Andhra Pradesh) and select “Apply for DL renewal”.
Step 4: Go through the instructions and click on “Continue”.
Step 5: Fill out details like your Driving Licence number and date of birth.
Step 6: Enter the captcha code and click on “Get DL Details”.
Step 7: Verify the DL information, select the licence category, state and RTO, and click on the “Proceed” button.
Step 8: On the next page, select the service type as “DL Renewal” and fill out the online form.
Step 9: Upload the required documents and click “Submit”.
Step 10: Print or download the acknowledgement receipt for future reference.
You can produce the acknowledgement receipt at the RTO on the designated date. Post document verification, you will receive the renewed Driving Licence via post.

Driving or riding a motor vehicle with an expired DL is an offence under The Motor Vehicles Act. You can be penalised for the same by the authorities.
If the Driving Licence remains expired for over a year, you have to appear for a driving test during the renewal process.
If the DL is expired for more than 5 years, you must apply for a new Driving Licence.

You can renew the DL in AP under the following circumstances.
If your Driving Licence is about to expire.
If the DL holder attains an age of 40.
You can renew the Driving Licence after expiry. If you renew the licence within the grace period, you need not pay any additional fees. However, if you submit the renewal application after the grace period, you have to pay additional fees.
Similarly, if you apply for renewal after 1 year of DL expiry, you have to appear for a driving test. And if the Driving Licence remains expired for more than 5 years, you have to apply for a new DL.
You must download Form 2 to apply for your Driving Licence renewal in AP.
A Medical Certificate (Form 1A) is necessary for transport category DL renewal or if the applicant is over the age of 40. If you do not fall under this criteria, you need not submit Form 1A during licence renewal.
