The Aam Admi Bima Yojana is a life insurance scheme launched on 2nd October 2007. It is a social security scheme that is targeted toward the low-income families of India. This scheme benefits those who are usually not on a payroll, for example, fishermen, auto drivers, cobblers, etc. Due to low income, they may not think of saving money to face a grave contingency like death or disability. The Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY) provides them with monetary aid to face such unfortunate situations.
The Aam Aadmi Yojana provides coverage to all eligible members when an unfortunate event like death or disability occurs. Here is the coverage of this insurance plan:
Death due to natural causes: A death certificate of the deceased will be required at the time of claim.
Death due to an accident: A medical certificate stating the cause of death as an accident will be required while claiming.
Partial Disability or Permanent Total Disability: A medical certificate issued by a government medical practitioner stating the nature of disability will be required at the time of claim.
Here is a table listing coverage and sum assured

Accidental death | Rs.75,000/- |
Partial disability | Rs.37,500/- |
Permanent total disability | Rs.75,000/- |
Scholarship | Rs.100/- per month per child |
Through this insurance plan, the government wishes to provide monetary help to those who are in need due to unfortunate events like death or disability. Considering this, the plan has certain situations that are not covered. Here is the list of exclusions of AABY:
Cost of hospitalisation
Death or disability due to mental disorders
Suicide

Aam Admi Bima Yojana provides social security to people from low-income families. Considering this, the plan has the following features.
The premium of the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana is very low. This makes the plan affordable and one does not have to think about arranging money for paying the premiums of this plan. Moreover, half of the premium amount is borne by the government.
Technology has helped the government to provide better services to the general public. AABY is one such example. All members’ data is digitised and monitored with the help of a web-based system that allows a quick exchange of information when required. This is helpful at the time of claim settlement.
Queries of members can be easily solved by getting in touch with the nearest Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) branch. A person can get in touch with a contact person via call or email as well.
The AABY provides various benefits to the members of the plan. Here is a list:
The entry age for Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana is set between 18 and 59. If a member of this plan suffers death due to natural causes, LIC will settle a death claim for Rs.30,000.
Any type of disability suffered by a family member comes as a massive shock for the family members. This shock is magnified if the person who has a disability is the sole breadwinner of the family. With the help of AABY, the family can use a helping hand in terms of finances. The disability claim under this plan is rupees 37500/- for permanent partial disability and rupees 75000/- for permanent total disability because of an accident.
Accidents are highly unpredictable and can result in grave consequences. Thus, the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana provides coverage for accidental death. Under this coverage an amount of Rs. 75000/- is paid to the nominee of the plan.
The Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana does not only provide death and disability benefits but also ensures that at least two children in the family continue to receive education without a break. It offers a free scholarship of Rs. 100/- each month on a half-yearly basis to eligible children studying between 9th and 12th standard.

AABY promoted financial inclusion by bringing insurance services to the doorstep of the economically disadvantaged, many of whom might not have had any formal financial protection against life's uncertainties. Like many social security schemes, the continuous evaluation and expansion to cover more risks and increase the sum assured could enhance its effectiveness and impact. Expanding its reach and adequacy of coverage will improve its impact on financial inclusion and social justice. With simple enrollment and claims, AABY should be leveraged nationwide.
AABY is a term insurance scheme launched by the Indian Government on October 2, 2007, aimed at low-income families, providing financial assistance in case of death or disability. It's designed for individuals not on a regular payroll, like fishermen, auto drivers, and cobblers, offering them monetary aid during challenging times.
The scheme targets individuals between 18 and 59 years old who are part of Below Poverty Line (BPL) families or those slightly above the poverty line engaged in specific vocations. One member per family, ideally the breadwinner, is eligible for coverage.
AABY offers coverage for death due to natural causes or accidents, partial disability, and permanent total disability. It provides specific sum assured amounts for each contingency, including a scholarship benefit for the policyholder's children.
The scheme does not cover hospitalisation costs, death or disability due to mental disorders, suicide, involvement in illegal activities, dangerous sports, substance abuse, or situations arising from war-like conditions in the country.
AABY is highly affordable with low premiums, half subsidised by the government. This makes it accessible to individuals from low-income groups, ensuring they can secure financial protection without financial strain.
Enrolment in AABY is facilitated through designated Nodal Agencies appointed by the government, which could be central or state government departments, Union Territories, or NGOs. Prospective applicants must visit these agencies with the necessary documents to enrol.
The total annual premium for AABY is 320 rupees, with 50% subsidised by the government. This split payment makes it easier for eligible individuals to maintain their coverage.
The claim process involves submitting specific documents, such as a death certificate for death claims, medical certificates for disability claims, and relevant academic and banking details for scholarship claims. Claims should be filed with the Nodal Agency handling the scheme.
AABY covers a wide range of vocations, particularly those involving manual or unorganised labour, such as agriculturists, fishermen, construction workers, artisans, and many more, reflecting the scheme's focus on supporting the economically vulnerable sections of society.
The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India manages AABY. Individuals can contact the nearest LIC branch or find the helpline number on the LIC website for assistance, queries, or more information.
Loss of eyes and limbs is covered under partial disability for Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana. A person with a partial disability may be able to carry out daily activities or work to earn a living.
The premium of AABY is very affordable. This is because half of the premium amount is being subsidised to the members of the scheme from the Social Security Fund. Thus, the Social Security Fund plays an important role in the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana.
Members’ NEFT details are required at the time of enrollment because these details will be used in case of a claim. This makes the claim process faster and easier for both – the insurer as well as the insured.
