Kolkata, also referred to as Calcutta, is the capital of West Bengal. It is also India's cultural capital. Thus, as one would expect, it houses several business, commercial and military ports; not to mention the Calcutta Stock Exchange. With such increased development comes an increase in job opportunities. And what likely follows is increased pollution, work stress, unhealthy food habits and other health-endangering factors.
Buying health insurance in Kolkata is a one-stop solution to manage steep medical costs. On this page, we'll be discussing ACKO's 1 Crore Sum Insured Medical Plan and its benefits. If you are a resident of Kolkata or are soon to be one, read ahead to know more!
Since Kolkata is inundated with IT companies and other industries, there is a higher risk of developing lifestyle related illnesses. In fact, according to the National Family Health Survey (2005-06), 18% of men and 30% of women are overweight or obese in Kolkata. The same report goes on to say that the prevalence of Tuberculosis in the city is also on the higher side.
Although a city like Kolkata may have all the necessary medical facilities to treat different medical conditions, the costs could amount to a lot. During a health crisis, the last thing you want to do is scramble around for finances. Thus, it is wise to proactively purchase a health insurance policy to be financially secure during medical emergencies.
Now that we have made a case for the need for health insurance in Kolkata, here’s why it is more advantageous to buy it online than offline.
Buying health insurance plans in Kolkata via the online mode is more cost-effective than buying them through an insurance company’s branch office. This is because online insurers save a lot on operational costs and can reduce costs on their health plans significantly.
Both purchasing a health policy and raising claims during a medical emergency can take a while if you opt for offline health insurance. Online insurance, in contrast, can be purchased more quickly, from anywhere. Raising claims is also streamlined thanks to the digital processes.
Comparing different types of health insurance plans offline in Kolkata can be an arduous task. Alternatively, if you compare plans online, you can do so very easily and in no time. All you have to do is go to different insurer websites and compare plans based on their cost-to-benefit ratio.

Less or no waiting period: Most medical policies have a defined waiting period for specific health conditions. So, look for a plan that has a lower or no waiting period.
Avoid copayments and deductibles: Cost-sharing schemes in health plans can be attractive because they lower the payable premium. However, when making a claim, you will have to arrange finances for a part of the medical expenses. So, it is better to choose a plan that offers complete coverage.
