Every mother wants her child to be soft and feathery in touch. Small tender hands and feet which are as soft as velvet are every mother’s wish.
Let us now look into some of the most common myths around baby skin care and what are the opposing facts about your baby's skin that you as a parent must know:
Most of the people suggest water to be an ultimate cleanser for babies but the amount of dirt and germs present in the air do not go away with water. They need proper cleansing with a mild soap which retains the skin barrier function and helps to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.
The media and marketing don't let us think beyond brands and renowned names but all the available soaps in the market are not good. The soaps contain harmful chemicals and are not pH neutral, which can cause dryness and itchiness of skin and at times rashes too on the baby’s skin. A soap must be mild, natural and free from parabens and benzoates.
The biggest of the myth is babies do not need moisturizing as they by God’s grace have smoother skin but we tend to forget that the moment a baby takes birth the natural environment and the air treats him equally as that of an adult and a baby loses five times more moisture than an adult skin does. The best way to keep a baby’s skin soft is to massage the baby with tender coconut oil or mustard oil and in winters, use olive oil before bathing and putting a moisturizing lotion afterwards.
We have often heard our grandmothers scold a new mother for making the baby wear a diaper. A fresh diaper doesn’t cause rashes but if left unchanged for long hours or over-full can definitely send a call to the rash monster. It is advisable to change a diaper every 3–4 hours for a clean and healthy baby skin. Also, while changing diapers, leave the baby as it is for few minutes and then wipe the place with wet wipes of good quality and apply a moisturizer and dust baby powder over the place so that the skin is clean and doesn’t cause any irritation or rash. In case of a rash, use medicated dusting powder and lotion for instant relief.
Last but not the least as heard from many elderly people that milk is good for babies and it soothes the baby, reality is that it may cause allergies if left unwashed and mosquitoes and flies will also wander over the place. Being a mother use your own instinct while deciding for your kid and he will bask in the glory of your love and care.
