Research and studies suggest that ideally, your baby should be able to take her first steps by the age of 10-12 months. Even if there is a delay, it suggests that there is some problem in achieving this milestone for your baby. Be patient and look for simple ways to make your baby walk on her own sooner.
How do babies learn to walk?
As your baby grows up to 4 or 5 months of age, she will start rolling on the bed and by 6-7 months of age, she will start crawling on the floor. As she grows up to 9 months, she will start grabbing objects around and try to stand up on her own by holding those objects. She will try to balance herself and at this stage, you need to encourage your child to take a few steps as well. It also depends on the strength of her legs, so make sure that from the very beginning you massage her legs well with some oil and also make her exercise her legs by moving them around while she is lying down on the bed.
This will give physical strength to her legs and she will learn to be on her feet fast. You can also grab her hand in your hand and help her in taking a few steps at a distance.
She will be able to master the art of standing up and moving around. If she is not able to stand on her legs and her feet is dragging while you are trying to make her stand, then do not force her to walk. This only means that she will take some more time to achieve this milestone.
How to help your baby to walk?
Your baby needs full support when she starts to walk and needs to know how to sit down once she is on her feet in a standing position. You need to teach her how to sit down from the standing position or else she will sit abruptly and hurt herself.
Grandma’s Tip: Show her how to bend her knees and sit down on the floor comfortably without toppling over. You can also take help of a push toy or her colorful toy and make it run ahead of her so that she will try to walk and catch it on her own.
What to do when the baby doesn’t walk?
It is normal for your baby to walk at around 10 months to 15 months(max.) but due to any reason if she has a problem in reaching this milestone then you need to consult your doctor.
If your baby is premature then she will definitely take more time to reach the milestone of walking independently. Avoid bringing in walkers for the baby as they restrict the movement of your little one while she is moving from one corner to another and also there is a risk of toppling over in a walker and this might cause an injury to your baby.
What to expect when the baby starts walking?
1. Between 10-15 months, your baby should be able to stand independently on her own. She should be able to squat down on her own and should be able to stand back again.
2. The walk of your baby is steady by the time she is 20-months-old and she can move freely from one room to another. At this stage, your baby will enjoy push and pull toys and she will walk with legs apart and this is quite normal as she is trying to balance herself while walking.
3. At around 16 months of age, your little one will start climbing up the stairs and she can climb down as well. Make sure that you are around when she is doing so to avoid any injury or fall out while climbing.
4. At the stage of 18 months, your baby will move smoothly from one place to another and is a pro at climbing up the furniture. She will also start kicking the football with ease and start dancing on the music as well with few dancing steps.
At this point, encourage her to do good and teach her well the dance moves and some football skills as well.
5. By the time your child is 20 months old, he is pro at walking and she will come to you for an interaction as well. She will explore the things around and look at every corner of the house.
Make sure that things, which can cause any harm to your baby are out of her reach so that she can move happily around the house.
