Dealing With The Common Breastfeeding Challenges Of Breastfeeding Twins

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Breastfeeding challenges are plenty out there! However, on a whole new level, breastfeeding twins at a time can be even more challenging for a new mom. Many mothers get overwhelmed and therefore breastfeed for a short while or give up altogether since breastfeeding twins can be tiring. Whereas caregivers and the father can pitch in to provide help to the mother in all other areas, a mother faces many challenges in breastfeeding twin or multiples.

How to deal with breastfeeding challenges for twins

There are some things a mother must keep in mind while dealing with the common breastfeeding challenges of breastfeeding twins:

Look after their individual needs

Your babies have come together. But remember both of them are individuals and unique in their own ways. Take into consideration their individual needs. A new mother has too many things going on in her life, therefore ask your family members or your partner to watch both babies during feeding to tap any red flags.

Keep good company

Surround yourself with positive people and avoid the naysayers. Looking after twins and multiples is tough but a new mother needs people who support her in the journey rather than predict doom. Join a support group where you can meet people in a similar situation like yourself.

Be cautious about your health

Do not delay adhering to breastfeeding woes like sore nipples. Having two or more babies constantly at the breasts is tough, and any signs of sore nipples, dryness, or thrush must be attended to. For sore nipples, apply small amount of breast milk and purified lanolin in the sensitive areas. You can also apply breast milk and let it dry for 5–10 minutes for healing cracked nipples.

Don't hurry

Do not be in a rush to create a breastfeeding routine. By six weeks, your twins are likely to fall into a pattern. To start with, feed on cue and have patience.

Make yourself a priority too!

Finally, however far-fetched it may seem to a new mother, taking care of yourself must be a priority. Accept help and seek help without hesitation. A mother of twins or multiples is more prone to postpartum depression given the overwhelming situation she suddenly finds herself in. Do not try to be a supermom. Be unabashed in seeking that elusive ‘Me’ time even if it is only for 20–30 minutes a day.

Take care and enjoy the double whammy the Almighty has bestowed on you. The tough times will become a memory one day. Be patient with yourself and enjoy your little bundles of love and joy. The tough times shall pass soon!
