Now let us look into the milestones achieved by your 2-month-old baby so far.

    Social development

Your baby will be an active communicator by now.

Sometimes she will aim a big smile at you and instantly you smile back. You can begin “Smile-talk” by giving the first smile whenever you notice she is watching you attentively. In the beginning, your baby may be shy to meet your gaze but having a smile talk will help her from becoming overwhelmed.

She will even babble to grasp your attention. Cries are also a means of communication. She will have different sounds depending upon the various cues.

To name a few – when she is hungry, sleepy, gassy, lonely, uncomfortable or in need of your company. Familiarising with your baby’s voice is a process of trial and error. Have patience and do your best to respond to her cues. This will teach her both confidence and trust. Gradually, she will start socialising like a butterfly and respond with gurgles, coos, oohs and ahhs. She will start to smile at people.

You can buy an unbreakable mirror to hang near your baby’s crib. She will love seeing her own facial expressions and movements. Now she will be able to focus on your face as a whole instead of just looking at your eyes or mouth only. She will enjoy being around other babies.

Grandma’s Tip: Encourage her to be lifted by family members and friends. Don’t keep her confined to just your embrace as that will make her a sharmili (shy) kid when she grows up. Let her be around your near and dear ones and she will learn to be comfortable with others. Socialising skills must be instilled at a very early age.

    Physical development

It is quite normal as a mom to wonder how much your 2-month-old baby should weigh and measure. But remember that healthy babies vary in weight and height and don’t try to compare with other babies.

If she is on a steady upswing as per the standard Indian growth chart and active, it is an indication that all is well. She will now open and shut her hands. You can place a toy or rattle in her open hand and see if she grasps it in her grip.

Give your baby objects to hold and play with. You can try with everyday usable objects like plastic measuring cups, plastic ladles that are lightweight and colourful. She will stretch and kick legs when lying down. You can tie an anklet with lots of bells to her ankles; she will have fun learning that her kicks can make bell tinkling sounds. Your baby will now try to support her upper body with arms when lying on stomach. You can give her plenty of tummy time by encouraging her to lift her upper body by talking to her or holding her favourite toy in front of her.

She will try to raise her head and chest when lying on stomach. Encourage her by appreciating through clapping hands even if it is just for a few seconds she is lifting her head understand that she is strengthening her neck muscles. She will begin to push up when lying on her tummy.

    Brain development

At birth, your baby’s brain is at 25% of its adult size. As per data, an Indian baby’s first year marks the most rapid brain growth of her lifetime. Currently, during this time the developing brain are directly tapped by baby’s interaction with the world around her. That is the reason your baby is busy soaking in sounds, sights, smells, language and emotional surroundings. Recognition of your face, voice, hand-eye coordination and object recognition are your baby’s major developmental tasks at 2-months.

You must have observed that your baby smiles at the sound of your voice. Speak to her with imitating baby talk, with high-pitch, dramatic, exaggerated and slow voices. You can widen your eyes and mouth to encourage her smile. She will begin to babble and by listening to adults’ talk she is learning the importance of verbal communication.

    Cognitive development

Now you will observe your cutie pie turning her head towards the direction of the sound. Introduce her to lots of different sounds. Talk to her, sing to her, and expose her to crowds or family get together. She will be startled by loud noises, so be prepared to soothe her. Your baby will follow moving objects.

Hang a bright colourful mobile toy above your baby’s crib and set it at a low speed at first. As she will get better at following the objects, then you can steadily increase the speed setting. Your baby should also be able to reach for objects. Dangle toys that are colourful and musical just at easily reachable distance and see if she swipes at it with excitement. She will briefly try to calm herself by bring her hands to her mouth to suck and self soothe.
