"I Am A Word Detective"

Your child's expanse of creative learning is growing. Help your 6 year old build his vocabulary in creative exciting ways. By linking the words with their respective meanings, your child will not only learn new words but also use them in right contexts.
You could make your child a word detective through an interesting activity.

Steps:

1. Things you will need: Lined notebook paper, Pencil,Dictionary, Story/book of his choice.

2. Take a lined sheet of notebook paper and make 3 columns.

3. Label the first column as "WORD". This will be the narrowest column as only one word has to be fit in it.

4. The second column may be labelled as "What I think the word means based on how it's used in the story.” This column has to be 3 inches wide.

5.Label the third column as "What I know it means after looking it up in the dictionary.” This column is also 3 inches wide.

6. Now let your child start reading a story. Tell him as he read he has to be a "Word Detective" looking for words whose meaning he is not sure of.

7. As he encounters one such word, get him to write in the first column.

8. Next, let him guess what could be the meaning of the word. The story, pictures and context given can help him guess the meaning. Make him write the meaning in the second column.

9. Then, get him to check the dictionary for the true meaning of the word and fill in the final column.

10. Finally, explain him the meaning of the word to improve his understanding.

This activity will help your child to look for new words, get him to work on context clues and also become familiar with the use of dictionary.In future, if he needs to find a word meaning he shall use the dictionary and not the 'Google' search engine.
