Let's Make A Rainbow Disc Spinner

Working with different art supplies and craft materials helps your child to work on his fine motor skills and create various designs and patterns. Help your child make his own rainbow disc spinner.

Requisites: 1 compact disc, 1 piece of box card (approx. 15cm x 15cm), 1 A4 sheet of paper (white), 50cm of string, metal skewer, coloured pens, scissors and glue.

Steps:

1. Let your child trace out 1 cardboard circle and 2 paper circles using the compact disc as a circle template. Cut out the traced circles. Your child may need your assistance here.

2. Get your child to create a pattern on each white paper circle using coloured pencils, sketch pens, crayons or paints. For example, on one white circle he can draw round circles each of different colour while he can fill the second white circle with colourful dots.

3. Paste the coloured circles to either side of the cardboard circle.

4. Pierce two holes through the centre of the circle, using the metal skewer.

5. Thread the string through both holes, to form a loop, and tie off the end.

6. To spin your disc, hold the string at either ends. Spin the disc in large circles which gets the string twisted up. Once the string is twisted, pull on either ends and the disc will spin.

7. Your child observes how the pattern changes when the disc spins.

Before starting the activity, you can talk to your child about the rainbow and its different colours (VIBGYOR).
