Your Child is Ready to Embrace the Foundation For Safe Behaviour

Your bundle of joy is now a big first grader. From the protected home environment he is going to explore the school environment and will be attending various classes outside home for the overall development of his personality. As a parent, you want to do all you can to protect his emotional and physical well-being even when you are not around him.

What you can do

Firmly communicate the rules for being safe. Through consistent reinforcement, your child will learn what safety measures he should always follow. While in the car, ensure your child wears the seat belt. While playing in the neighbourhood, talk to him about watching out for cars and other traffic. Ensure your child wears a helmet while riding a bicycle. Also teach him about correct signals for traffic safety -- when to take right, left turns or to stop. Supervise your child’s play on playgrounds and make sure the playgrounds are safe.

If it’s hot outside, teach your child how to put on sunscreen. If there are mosquitoes outside, teach your child to apply creams like Odomos or wear a mosquito band.

Swimming is another activity where you have to ensure your child is safe. Ensure that the pool has a four sided fence with a self-closing gate. Always supervise your child when he goes for swimming. Under the able guidance of an instructor, let him learn how to swim and know the safety rules around water. While learning an organized sports activity like football, teach your child about sports safety, including the need to wear protective sports gear such as knee and arm guard etc.

Safety at home

Safety at home is equally important. Keep all medicines, phenyl and other chemicals in a secure place and teach your child not to touch them. In the kitchen, your child may want to peel and cut vegetables. Ensure he does so under your supervision. Educating your child about dealing with strangers is very important in today’s world. While answering the door bell, make sure your child does not open the door to any stranger. He should not get into any stranger’s car or eat something given by them. It will be better if the child’s school curriculum includes information on how to deal with strangers. Through reinforcement and implementing firm rules on safety, you will be laying the foundation of safe behaviour in your child from an early age.
