1. Get a pre-conception checkup

It’s wonderful that you’ve decided to get pregnant. Now what you need to do is make sure your body is fighting fit and ready for the pregnancy. It is advisable to get a full check-up. Check if you have any nutritional deficiencies. Ask your doctor about any supplements you may need. Any underlying medical problems that may come up should be dealt with at this stage so that you can safely become pregnant.

2. Get to know your cycle

It is vital to know exactly when you are ovulating. Having sexual intercourse on your ovulation dates will maximize your chances of conceiving as soon as possible. Learn about the typical signs of ovulation. You can monitor your daily temperature, as there is typically a change in body temperature around the time of ovulation. There may be a change in your cervical mucus, which usually becomes thin and slippery when you are most fertile. You may also feel a twinge of pain in your abdomen. Another good option is to use home ovulation prediction kits. These can help you know that you are ovulating and also predict the best time to conceive.

3. Maintain a healthy body weight

Having too much or too little weight can affect your chances of conception. So, you need to ensure that you maintain an optimum body weight. If you are overweight or underweight, take measures accordingly. Cut out junk food and sugary drinks from your diet. Make sure you eat a balanced diet and get a moderate amount of exercise every day. Make sure not to overdo it as too much exercise may hamper regular ovulation. Brisk walking, swimming or moderate aerobics are good options that you can try.

4. Cut down on the bad habits

Smoking and alcohol can both be highly detrimental to your chances of conceiving as well as carrying a pregnancy successfully to term. So once you decide that you want to get pregnant, cut out drinking and smoking immediately.

Too much caffeine has also been shown to have hampering effects on conception and pregnancy. Limit your intake to one cup a day, or cut it out altogether if you can.

5. Stop your birth control ahead of time

Have you been on birth control pills or injections till now? Then you need to stop a few months before you plan to conceive. After you've been using birth control for some time, it will take your body a few cycles to start ovulating regularly and be ready for pregnancy. Moreover, this gives you time to monitor your cycle to pinpoint your ovulation dates.

6. Take prenatal vitamins

Once you decide that you want to get pregnant, one of the first things you should do is ask your doctor about starting on folic acid supplements. You should start taking 400 mcg of folic acid every day for a month before getting pregnant. Folic acid is vital when you’re trying to conceive, as it promotes ovulation and improves your fertility. Once you do get pregnant, it also helps prevent birth defects of the baby's brain and spine.
