Being well-informed about ovulation increases your odds of conception. There may be things you may not know but should about ovulation. Lets discuss them.

The things you should know about ovulation:

Have sex before you ovulate

Ovulation usually happens 10-15 days before your next cycle.  If your cycles are regular, you can predict the ovulation time.  Besides, the cervical mucus is more wet, clear and slippery during this time. The body basal temperature also rises after ovulation. The ideal condition where pregnancy chances are high is when the sperm is ready and is waiting for the egg for conception to happen. Sperm can be in a woman’s body for 4-5 days while egg has to be fertilized within the first 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. Having sex two to four days before you ovulate is your most fertile time.

Ovulation boosts couple’s desire for sex

As ovulation approaches, the desire for sex is at its peak. Listen to your body’s signs to maximize your chances to get pregnant.

Eggs are not created every month

Women are born with all the eggs that she will have in her lifetime. With age, the quality and the number of eggs decline. So, its not that eggs are made every month. To have a better chance at conception, its ideal to have a baby by 30 years of age. Once over 35, there are chances of miscarriage, infertility, birth defects etc.

Overall health-Impacts ovulation and future baby’s health

Your overall health has to be in good shape during pre conception phase as it will have an effect on your ability to get pregnant, sustain pregnancy and future  baby’s health. During preconception time, take folic acid supplements. If the levels of folic acid are low, it can lead to infertility issues and higher risk of miscarriage and birth defects.

Does menstruating always imply you are ovulating?

The answer is NO! If you are getting your periods, it does not always imply all is ok with ovulation. If cycles are irregular, periods are light or heavy or no period for a couple of months, then these conditions needs to be checked with your doctor before you try to conceive.

Does ovulating ensure pregnancy?

The answer is NO! It is definitely one important factor which will increase the chances of getting pregnant. But alone cannot guarantee pregnancy. The poor quality of sperm, blocked  fallopian tubes, infections resulted due to surgery in reproductive organs or an unexplained cause of infertility,  can hinder pregnancy.

While planning to start a family, it is very important for a couple to be well-informed about ovulation. This will improve their chance to conceive. In case conception does not happen after a year of trying, its better to consult a doctor who can check for any underlying medical issues, if any and seek treatment for the same.
