Let’s take a closer look at what FSH is and how it can have an impact on conception.

What is FSH?

FSH stands for Follicle Stimulating Hormone. It is a hormone that can directly affect your chances of conceiving as well as sustaining pregnancy. An abnormal FSH test can help to reveal menopause, polycystic ovary syndrome, or ovarian cysts in women, or underdeveloped testes or low sperm count in men.

How does FSH Impact Fertility?

The level of FSH a woman’s body produces correlates to the quality and quantity of her remaining eggs. If FSH levels are too high or too low, conception can become more difficult as it affects the menstrual cycle and whether or not ovulation occurs.

What is the Ideal FSH Level for Conception?

Typically, women that are trying to get pregnant should have FSH levels below 10mIU/ml.

Why do I Need to Know my FSH Levels?

Knowing your FSH levels is important to predict how fertile you are. The level of FSH your body produces is directly related to the quality and quantity of your remaining eggs. Thus, being aware of your FSH level can be a useful indicator in predicting your chances of conception at any given time period.

What does a High FSH Level Indicate?

As a woman grows older, the quality and quantity of her eggs starts to dwindle. In response, the body attempts to compensate and produces more FSH in order to stimulate ovarian function. This is most commonly seen in women experiencing premature menopause or who are at an age when menopause is approaching.

What does a Low FSH Level Indicate?

Low FSH levels can affect fertility and result in irregular cycles. This is commonly seen in women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). If the body is not producing enough FSH, it cannot sustain a healthy ovarian reserve.

When is FSH Tested?

You can get an FSH test prescribed by your doctor. The test is to be performed beginning on cycle day 3 (the 3rd day of your menstrual cycle) and continue through cycle day 5.

What Types of Tests are Done for FSH?

The Typical FSH tests for men and women are:

Blood Test: This is done by injecting a needle into a vein on your arm like any regular blood test.

Urine Test: You will be asked for multiple urine samples throughout a period of 24 hours to test the FSH levels in your body.

Other Tests: Other tests involved alongside FSH testing are oestrogen, testosterone, luteinizing hormone and oestradiol tests.

What to do in Case of High FSH?

If your FSH levels are over the optimum range, do not lose heart. There are several things you can try, including the following:

1. Maintain an optimal body weight

2. Eat dark green vegetables and iodine-rich foods

3. Keep your blood sugar levels in check

4. Get some daily exercise

5. Reduce stress

6. Increase your intake of superfoods

7. Try fertility massages or acupuncture

Improve the quality of your life by incorporating some basic diet and lifestyle tweaks, and you’ll experience normal FSH levels in no time!
