You need to have a full body health check-up when you stop taking all the contraceptives. This way, your body will be fully ready to conceive and the doctor can mend your health and lifestyle accordingly. Start taking folic acid supplements much in advance before you plan a baby.
If you are on a contraceptive pill and planning to have a baby, then do stop taking the pills as you finish one complete cycle of them. Once you have one period after you stop taking the contraceptive pill, you can start planning your baby from that ovulation cycle. You might get pregnant immediately after you stop taking the pill or you might take long, it all depends on your lifestyle and the overall health of your body. In both the cases, don’t panic!
Sterilisation can be reversed but that is the hardest contraception to do so. You have to go under the knife to reverse the sterilisation. As you get older, reversal is less successful, so you need to decide during your younger years. It is possible that sterilisation might damage your fallopian tubes, so in that case, conception is almost impossible.
When you start using any method of contraception, it stops your ovaries from ovulating and in turn, you cannot conceive. It thickens the cervical mucus and sperm can’t enter easily into your cervix. Once you stop any of the contraception methods that you have been using, then within a month, your period starts and normal ovulation cycle will take place. The after-effects of contraceptives wear off easily within a month once they are removed.
A coil or an intrauterine device (IUD) is another method of contraception where it is fitted inside the uterus. It is a T-shaped plastic device that is inserted by your doctor to stop the process of pregnancy for almost 5 to 10 years. There are chances of getting pelvic inflammatory disease after inserting IUD. Before inserting this, you will be checked and treated for chlamydia or gonorrhea. It can be easily removed by any trained doctor or nurse and you can get pregnant in a normal way after the removal of IUD.
If you are taking progestogen pill, which is also known as ‘mini pill’ then you can stop it anytime if you plan to have a baby. Once your normal period starts, you can start preparing for your pregnancy. No harm will be done to your baby in terms of health once you get pregnant immediately after you stop taking the mini pill. So, go ahead and prepare for your little bundle of joy.
Intrauterine System(IUS) is similar to IUD that is inserted in your body to stop the process of fertility. This has higher chances of infections as it can increase the chances of infection from the bacteria that is already present in your body. Similar to IUD, you will be checked and treated for chlamydia and gonorrhea infection before IUS is inserted in your system. You can easily get this removed from the uterus once you plan to get pregnant and it can be taken out at any time from the body to start the process of pregnancy.
A contraceptive patch is just like a thin patch that helps in preventing pregnancy by releasing the hormones estrogen and progestin. They stop the ovaries from releasing eggs and also thicken the cervical mucus so the sperms can’t go easily into the cervix. You can easily apply this patch on the lower abdomen, buttocks or back. Replace the patch within a week with a new one. Wear this patch for 21 days or 3 weeks in a go and on the fourth, when you do not wear it, you will easily get your periods. When you stop using the patch, you will get pregnant easily and as soon as you want, as per your ovulation cycle.
After getting information on all these important things, you will surely pave your way towards pregnancy and your bundle of joy will soon be with you in the coming months.
