A Guide to Surrogacy: What Both Parties Should Know

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Surrogacy is an option many couples consider when fertility issues prevent them from getting pregnant naturally. At times, IVF cycles don’t give the desired result and couples consider surrogacy.

In surrogacy, the embryo formed by the egg of the mother and sperm of the father is placed into the uterus of a gestational surrogate. The surrogate will carry the baby till birth and then give the baby to the parents. It is legally agreed between the would-be parents and the surrogate woman that once the baby is born, he/she will be given to the parents.

If surrogacy is the option you are thinking of, it is very important to be well-informed about the surrogacy process and how it works. This holds true with prospective intended parents as well as prospective surrogates.

It is very important for both prospective surrogates and prospective intended parents to decide whether surrogacy is a right decision or not and if yes, what preparation needs to be done.

Surrogacy decision: Right choice or not?

For Prospective Surrogates

The decision about going for surrogacy is a challenging one, both physically and emotionally. The prospective surrogate will be going through a series of medical tests, pregnancy and labour. It is also emotionally challenging for her as she is carrying someone else’s baby and will part with him/her after birth.

But surrogacy provides her with immense financial benefits, which can change her life for better and above all, she is giving a precious gift to a family that is desperately trying for a baby since years. However, if she is not sure whether to go for surrogacy, she can talk to an attorney, coordinator of a surrogacy agency, or a doctor, and get clarity about the process. It is very important to be well-informed and have clarity in thinking while taking this life changing and challenging decision.

For Prospective Intended Parents

Going for surrogacy calls for being 100% committed to the process. Educate yourself about the financial investment involved. For instance, screening costs, legal fees, psychological support, gestational surrogate compensation, etc. If you are not sure about the decision, you can consult a surrogacy specialist or counsellor to clear your doubts.

Preparing for surrogacy

For Prospective Surrogates

Once the prospective surrogate has decided to go for surrogacy, she will need information to develop the surrogacy plan and prepare for surrogacy. She needs information on many questions like:

-What type of surrogacy would it be? Traditional or Gestational?

-Are the intended parents known to her or does she have to work with an agency to find the match?

-Will she be working with an agency throughout the surrogacy process or be pursuing surrogacy independently?

If she has decided to work with an agency, she will coordinate things with a surrogacy specialist who will give her inputs, which will help develop the surrogacy plan.

Next, she will complete the screening requirements to meet the agency’s qualifications for prospective surrogates. She will have a psychological evalutaion, run a series of tests to check her overall health, etc.

For Prospective Intended parents

Now, you will create your surrogacy plan, which will have your goals and preferences for the surrogacy process listed out. Information you need to ponder on includes:

-The type of surrogacy you want: Traditional or Gestational?

-Do you know a surrogate or need matching services?

-Whether you will work with an agency? If yes, which one?

-Your goals for surrogacy?

Next, you will complete the screening process to meet the agency’s qualifications for intended parents. The screening process includes home assessment, criminal records check, child abuse records check, etc.

Deciding on surrogacy option and planning for surrogacy are crucial for both parties in the entire surrogacy process. They need to be clear and committed on their decision and devise a plan, which satisfies their respective goals during the coming months.
