Important Facts about Periods & Conception that You should Know

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Before getting pregnant, it is very important that you should be aware of your menstrual cycle. If it is normal, then your chances of conception are bright and if it is very irregular then you might have to bring it back on track to get pregnant easily.

The average cycle of a woman is 28 to 31 days and some variation each month is very much normal. A week’s deviation in menstrual cycle is all right but if it deviates for two weeks then this should be taken care of and corrected soon.

#1 Pregnancy with Irregular Periods

The chances of getting pregnant with irregular periods are low but assuming that you can’t get pregnant in this situation is wrong. If you are getting your periods after every 28 days then you will ovulate on the 14th day of your cycle every month. If your cycle is 35-42 days, then there are less days of ovulation and this causes delay in pregnancy. This needs to be checked by your doctor and she will discuss your cycle and ovulation days with you to make you aware of your cycle, increasing your chances of getting pregnant.

#2 Getting Pregnant during Periods

Many women believe that there are no chances of getting pregnant during periods but there's nothing to prove this right. It is not very common to get pregnant during periods but it is indeed possible. If a woman has a shorter cycle of 21 days then there are chances of her being pregnant if she has intercourse on the fifth day of her periods. This is possible because a sperm can live up to five days and if it is present in a woman’s fallopian tubes then during ovulation period, she can get pregnant.

#3 Birth Control Pills

Birth control pills just do their job of controlling the unplanned pregnancy and they have nothing to do with your pregnancy cycle. If you are planning a baby then you just need to stop taking the birth control pills three months before your ovulation cycle and your ovulation cycle will start after that and you can easily get pregnant during that period.

#4 Right Time for a Pregnancy Test

Once you decide to get pregnant then you get all curious and excited to get the good news as soon as possible. There is no point in getting pregnancy tests done again and again unless you are sure that you are pregnant. The pregnancy hormone, known as the hCG in urine confirms your pregnancy. If you have missed your periods for more than 10 days then you can test your urine sample for pregnancy. For getting accurate results, you can test first morning urine that will confirm that you are pregnant or not.

#5 Periods and Pregnancy

This can’t occur at the same time as either you can be pregnant or you can have your periods. If your pregnancy is confirmed and suddenly you start having a period then it’s alarming. This can be implantation bleeding where the embryo plants itself into the wall of the uterus. This causes spotting that is lighter than your menstrual cycle. You need to take a pregnancy test a week after the bleeding to confirm your pregnancy and if you still spot bleeding then you need to see your doctor immediately.

#6 Best Time to Get Pregnant

It is a fact that if you are trying to get pregnant then you need to get intimate with your partner during a certain time. If you have a 28 days cycle then every 14th day your ovulation period will start, which is a start of your fertile window. It is a good idea to maintain an ovulation tracker by marking the dates of your last period day in the calendar every month. You can also purchase an ovulation kit that will help you in determining your fertile period. When you and your partner enjoy sex during this period of time, your chances of getting pregnant become higher.

Keeping in mind these important things, get ready to take a plunge into parenthood and enjoy this wonderful journey together.
