Surrogacy is an arrangement where a woman agrees to carry a pregnancy for a couple or person. The baby is given to the intended parents after his/her birth. Women who struggle with fertility issues consider surrogacy as an option to have a child.

Let us address who uses a surrogate? In other words, under what conditions a couple or person consider surrogacy as an option to have a child?
When a woman is suffering from a reproductive health issue, it stops her from getting pregnant or she is unable to sustain pregnancy. For instance, uterine issues like extensive fibroids, uterine scarring. Under these circumstances, she may consider surrogacy.
Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure where a part or the entire uterus is removed. Due to health conditions like cervical cancer or some other form of cancer where a woman may have to undergo hysterectomy included in the treatment process, she may not be in a position to conceive.
Health complications in earlier pregnancy can put mother and would be baby’s health at risk again which some women may want to avoid. They opt for surrogacy in such circumstances.
If a woman is in her late 30s, getting pregnant is hard as the number of eggs starts to decline after 30. She may either go for fertility treatments or opt for surrogacy at this age. If fertility treatment is not giving the desired result, she may consider surrogacy option.
Some women may get pregnant but are not in a position to carry their baby to full-term. Getting pregnant may not take long but sustaining the pregnancy till full term could be difficult. The growing foetus may not develop past a certain point. The cause could be treatable or untreatable. If it can’t be treated, surrogacy is considered.
Some women want to focus on their career, maintain their physique, continue with their job. These personal choices force them to choose surrogacy.
Whatever be the reason for a person or couple to consider surrogacy to have a child, its ultimately the couple and their doctor who will discuss whether to go for surrogacy or not. What work best for them will be advised by the doctor and the decision is left to the couple.
