Did you know that baby’s skin is also prone to acne? Yes, baby acne is normal in newborns. They do develop acne within the first 3 months which is harmless and go away without botheration. However, there are some which occur and cause discomfort and this needs care and attention.
Newborn babies are cute bundles of joy. Their skin is tender, soft and sensitive. Proper care and hygiene are necessary while bringing up your baby. Hygiene is very important and has to be followed by parents during all baby related activities like feeding, sleeping, playing, dressing up, etc.
Newborn acne can appear when the baby is just-born up to 3 months old. It is totally normal, safe and goes away on its own too. This is mostly caused due to the stimulation of baby’s oil glands from his mom’s hormones. Baby acne may appear all over the body and is more concentrated on baby’s face and torso. Few may appear on the baby’s forehead, cheeks or near his mouth.
Some babies get acne later called as infantile acne. These are large red, raised blemishes or rash which may stick around a little longer. These appear anywhere on the body. This acne does require a doctor visit since the baby’s skin is sensitive. It can be irritated by simple things such as saliva, vomit, certain types of fabric, crying episodes, and heat. So it is necessary to look after and keep your baby always clean.
The other types are heat rash or eczema which is skin infection which occurs in babies due to extremely dry and cracked skin. These usually cause discomfort along with fever in babies and requires treatment and care. Babies might even get cradle crap or tiny bumps usually on the head. And of course, there is diaper rash which has to be managed before it causes discomfort.
Always keep your baby clean. It is very important to clean and sanitize your baby’s clothes regularly. It is equally necessary to maintain a good hygienic environment in and around the baby to get rid of baby acne.
Never forget to clean the baby’s face with a soft washcloth or baby wipes after feeding. Regularly wash his nappy area. Always handle your baby only with clean hands. Use only moisturizer suitable for the baby’s skin.
Bathe your baby regularly. Use a mild fragrance-free, non-drying soap. Cleanse the area with warm water two or three times a day. Pat skin dry gently. Never ever scrub or pick at pimples. It will increase the risk of infection.
Do not use any materials or fabric that may result in scratching or itching. Make sure that your baby is not allergic to a sweater, jacket or the fabric of socks. Ensure the mattress and blanket is always clean and dry. Keep your baby away from hot environments and heavy baby clothing.
Using a humidifier in the room also helps and can ensure that the baby’s skin stays moisturized. Avoid acne or other skin care products meant for adults. These contain chemicals which may be harmful to the baby’s skin.
Never ever squeeze or pinch the acne. It will irritate your baby’s skin. Kissing or touching your baby if the skin is reddened will irritate your baby, as well. Take your baby out in fresh air.
Do not apply any fragrance since the chemicals in the artificial fragrances can irritate the baby’s sensitive skin. Always use hypoallergenic products, when possible even for laundry.
It is advisable not to eat allergic, spicy, oily foods while breastfeeding your baby since the food will directly impact your baby. You can have a lot of fresh fruit juices instead so that the baby gets all the essential vitamins and nutrients.
Baby acne may disappear without treatment. However, in some babies it might take several months, hence it is necessary to visit your pediatrician who will prescribe a medicated cream or ointment that can help clear up the acne. Never use over-the-counter acne treatments, face washes, or lotions on your baby’s skin. It will only worsen and aggravate the issue.
Dabbing the acne affected area with mom’s breastmilk can help in faster recovery. Dab the milk on the baby’s face or the affected area with a cotton pad. Allow it to dry and then gently wipe it off. Doing this regularly helps in getting rid of baby acne. Coconut oil also helps to moisturize baby’s skin. Dab and gently massage a little coconut oil over the affected area.
Baby powder helps in treating baby acne and diaper rashes. It dries the skin without clogging the pores and prevents sweating. However, it should not come in contact with your baby’s eyes and mouth. Finally, it is very important to be patient as this acne is harmless. The more stressed, worried or anxious you become the tougher it is to manage your baby.
