Different kinds of birthmarks

Here are some of the most common types of birthmarks:

1. Café Au Lait Spot:

Café Au Lait marks are pigmented birthmarks. They are brown spots and are usually present since birth. These spots are permanent and may grow or increase in number over time. It is absolutely normal to have them but if your child is born with 5 marks or more then it is due to genetic disorders. This darkening of the skin can be reduced with laser treatment.

2. Telangiectatic Nevus:

If a child is born with any discoloration on the skin which is flat and looks pink in color, such birthmark is known as Telangiectatic Nevus which is caused by the formation of blood vessels. These marks are also called angel kisses or stork bites. In most cases, no treatment is necessary since they disappear with no treatment whereas in other cases, these marks get covered by hair.

3. Congenital Melanocytic Nevus:

Congenital Melanocytic Nevus is the permanent mark of any size which can be present in any part of a child’s body at the time of his birth. Such marks often grow proportionally to the body size as the child matures. This type of birthmark is very rare, it could appear in any shape and the surface of such marks happens to be rough and bumpy. The method to prevent such kind of mark is still unknown.

4. Hemangiomas:

Hemangiomas occur most commonly in the first days or weeks after birth. It is abnormal lumps made up of blood vessels which has a deep red appearance. It can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly appears on the face, scalp, chest or back. If hemangiomas spot is small then it is likely to go away on its own without any treatment whereas in some cases it requires treatment.

5. Mongolian Spots:

Mostly Mongolian spots appear at the base of the spine or on the lower back and buttocks at the time of a child’s birth or within the first weeks of life. These spots are blue, bluish-gray, bluish-green or blue-black in color and can appear in any shape. In some cases, these types of marks fade away after a few years or sometimes they completely disappear. Therefore, no treatment is required in most cases.

6. Silvermark:

If anyone in the family has this kind of birthmark then there are chances that the newborn is also likely to be born with this mark. It is a silver streak of hair found mostly on the left or right side of the baby’s face where the forehead and the hairline meet.

7. Port Wine Stain:

This kind of marks is also called fire mark because of its pink-to-reddish color. These are always a birthmark and only in very rare cases develop in early childhood. Most often such marks appear on the face, head, arm, or leg and do not go away unless treated properly.

Doctors and skin experts are yet to assert the exact cause of birthmarks. Some of the birthmarks fade away or completely vanish as a child grows whereas some become permanent. Some parents consider it as a lucky mark while others wonder whether it should be treated medically or not?
