Extra care and good skin health are essential to avoid rashes and allergies to your little one. We must always be careful in managing the baby’s skin requirements and ensure that all skin products are free from chemicals. These harsh chemicals can harm your baby’s tender skin.

Few pointers about your baby’s skin:

• Newborn skin is very thin, fragile and soft.

• The baby’s skin needs time to get used to the new environment around it.

• The baby’s skin is sensitive to allergies and rashes in the earlier months, these could be in the form of diaper rash, allergy from soaps and shampoos, etc.

Hence, it is very important to use as many natural products as possible to keep your little one’s skin fair, clean, healthy, and supple.

10 natural and safe ways to make your baby's skin healthy and fair:

However, note that if your baby’s skin reacts to any of these things mentioned or if any of these causes rashes, kindly discontinue the same.

1. Gram Flour Paste

This is a commonly used pack for small babies.

This paste can be made at home using raw milk, turmeric, fresh cream, and gram flour (besan). Mix it well to form a thick paste. You can use a bit of oil during the winter months. Apply the thick paste to your baby’s skin softly, spreading it over her body. Leave it for 10 minutes. When the paste becomes dry, slowly massage the baby using oil and remove off the pack. Ensure that the pack doesn’t go into the baby’s mouth as it may cause diarrhea in babies.

Please remember that using oily baby cream available in stores can make your little one’s skin greasy, which can lead to skin rashes and allergies. Hence, using homemade packs is always better.

2. Massaging the baby with hot oil

The age-old method of oil massage is the best way to keep your baby’s skin tone nourished and healthy.

Using good massage oils helps to add an extra layer of moisture to your baby’s sensitive skin and helps restore the right balance of the oils in the skin cells. You can use olive oil, almond oil.

Regular hot oil massage helps in stimulation of the baby’s sense of touch which has a positive effect on the baby’s psychological and social development along with strengthening the baby’s bond with the parent. Massaging helps in soothing the skin, sleep inducement and also relieves symptoms of colic.

3. Body Pack:

Since baby’s skin is gentle and sensitive it is very important to use home made mild body back to make it glowing and soft. Regular application will keep the skin soft and attain a fair skin tone.

For making this body pack mix turmeric, sandalwood paste and saffron strands mixed with a bit of raw milk. Apply a thin layer to baby’s body. Leave it on for 10-15 mins so that it dries.Once it is semi-dry; scrub slowly and softly. Slowly wipe it off using damp cotton. It is highly effective and it defends him from infectious germs. Always make a fresh pack and apply. Do the test for allergies or rashes. If it occurs, discontinue.

4. Bathing in warm water

It is very important to bathe your baby in the right water temperature else it will harm your baby’s sensitive skin. Bath time is an effective way to bond with your baby. It is fun and helps to relax your baby too. Keeping your baby clean, including his hair, is very important to ward off any infection. Maintaining the right temperature is necessary to avoid injuries. Massaging and bathing in warm water is very effective in keeping your baby’s skin healthy and glowing.

5. Moisturization:

Basic skin care is essential to keep your baby’s skin smooth, soft, and fair. A baby’s skin is easily irritated by fragrances, dyes, and other ingredients in skin-care products and the environment. Hence, always use good quality hypoallergenic, non-fragrance moisturizers, lotions, and powders on the baby’s skin. Moisturizers help to hydrate the baby’s skin and replenish the lost nutrients. Always apply it after bath and three to four times a day to prevent any dryness.

6. Baby Scrub:

Though you can buy scrubs from the market, homemade scrubs are natural and effective. Scrubbing helps in exfoliating the dry skin cells and keeps your baby’s skin smooth, soft and fair. To make this traditional scrub for your baby’s skin, mix chickpea powder or besan, rose water, raw milk, and baby oil. You can use oat flaks with raw milk and mix and apply it on your baby’s skin. These are 100% natural and good during all seasons. Apply the paste softly on your baby’s skin and allow it to dry and rub it off gently. Never rub it with pressure as it might create rashes on your baby’s tender skin. The scrub helps to remove unwanted impurities from the skin and boosts its radiance.

7. Avoid Soap:

Try to avoid using soap on your baby’s skin. A baby’s skin is very sensitive and the harsh chemical in the soaps create dryness by taking away natural oils. The skin might start peeling off too. Instead, use a bath pack of besan with raw milk and rose water. Apply it all over your baby’s body and massage gently and wash it off with warm water. Try to use mild soaps, fragrance and paraben-free or a glycerin baby bar since they do not create much harm to your baby’s delicate skin.

8. Baby Wipes:

Baby wipes contain glycerin and do not cause skin irritation and rashes. Baby wipes are milder than the washcloth and are clinically proven to be safe for an infant’s sensitive skin.

Always use nontoxic, perfume-free, and hypoallergenic soft wipes to cleanse your baby’s face.

In case you're using it on your baby’s bottom, apply an ointment or vaseline after every diaper change to help soothe and protect your baby’s skin in between diaper changes. Be careful about using too much baby wipes for cleaning your baby’s mouth, hands, feet, etc, as too much of it can cause allergies.

9.  Fruits/Vegetables:

Always ensure that the skin has to be kept healthy to give it a natural glow. Fruits are full of nutrients and fiber which helps to cleanse your baby’s body from within. Regularly include fruit pulp, vegetable mash, soups etc in your baby’s diet for an overall improvement of your baby’s skin. Ensure to keep your baby hydrated by feeding breast milk and water. Check for the right amount of water to be given to your baby.

10. Sunlight

Do not expose your baby to direct sunlight until they are 6 months old. Always protect the tender skin with right kind of clothing. Always use fresh new outfits for your baby to avoid skin allergies.

Though we find a range of baby beauty products like talcs, lotions, creams, scrubs, soaps etc in the market, it is better to use simpler homemade natural products to reduce toxic exposure to your baby’s skin and maintain its skin tone.
