Why does your baby cry and how to stop it?

Below mentioned are some of the reasons for your baby crying and the ways to stop from crying.

 Hunger

Most probably, this would be the first cry of your baby to express his hunger. Licking his lips, sucking his fingers or hand, trying to suck your fingers when you keep them near his cheek are some of the signs of hunger and you should quench his hunger before he starts to cry.

 Sleepiness

Babies cannot put themselves to sleep. You need to lull them to sleep. Look out for signs like yawns, rubbing his ears, or eyes.

 Wet diaper

The discomfort from dirty diapers would perhaps lead him to cry and it is also an indication to change his diaper.

 Stomach pain

Some babies cry due to colic pain or gas. To soothe his colic pain, you can regularly massage your baby’s tummy gently with a finger in circular clockwise motions to ease the pain. To relieve your baby from gassy issues, lay him on his back and move his legs in a gentle cycling motion, pushing his legs lightly against his tummy.

 Difficult to burp

While breastfeeding or bottle feeding, babies tend to swallow air and if they do not burp it out, they feel uneasy and uncomfortable and begin to cry. You must place your baby against your chest his head above your shoulders and gently rub his back. He will soon burp. You should ensure that your baby burps to stop him crying. Burping will also prevent the baby from spitting up milk.

 Changes in temperature

When the weather is either too cold or too hot, your baby might cry to express his discomfort. Try to create an atmosphere that is bearable to your baby.

 Wants to be held

Your baby will be quite often longing for your hugging, cuddling and physical touch. Therefore, as a parent give them all in abundance. Your touch, voice and heartbeat can do magic with your baby.  The hugs and kisses can stop the inconsolable cry of your baby.

 Teething

Around four months of age, your baby may have gum swelling, drooling, refusing food and loose motions. You can check for teething by placing your clean finger on his gums. If the gums are very hard and there is swelling, it means the white pearl to about to pop out. Provide him with teething rings to chew on, massage gently his gums. Offer him a chilled cloth to munch. He will find some relief as the cloth massages the ridges of his gums while the cold numbs the pain.

 Wants a different exposure

Sometimes your baby may feel bored with the same environment, same atmosphere. o Step out with your fussy baby into the fresh air. Observe closely how much he will enjoy the air and the surroundings. An inquisitive baby would always love to explore and would prefer to be on the move always. Take him to regular walks and parks to entertain with same age group kids.

 Feeling sick

When babies are unwell, they cry to convey about their sickness. o Feel his body temperature with hands or with a clinical thermometer. Check all his body parts like the ears, gums, hands, legs and scan for any abnormality that is causing the pain. Check for diaper rashes in that area.

7 other ways to stop your baby from crying

1. Swaddling and snuggling

Your baby likes to feel as warm, cosy and secure as he did in the womb. To re-create that womb-like feeling, Swaddle your baby in a blanket, hold him or wear him against your shoulder.

2. Sucking

Research shows that sucking can steady a baby’s heart rate, calm flailing limbs. Your baby may calm himself by sucking on his finger or a pacifier. Though this does not fill his tummy, it surely does relax his nerves.

3. Shushing

Your baby may calm down his crying the moment he is exposed to the whooshing sound. It is because the whooshing noise is similar to the sound inside the womb. You can make a “shhh shhh” sound or can use a white noise machine – the vacuum cleaner or a mobile phone for the shushing your baby.

4. Side lying

As a fetus, your baby would have spent most of his time, lying on side inside the womb. So this position of lying on his side may soothe him from crying.

5. Swinging

The age old method of swinging or rocking a cradle may help calm your fussy baby. These fast and rhythmic motions do some magic to soothe him.

6. Sing a lullaby

Sometimes the rhythm and the movement seem to do the trick. So try singing in your voice and also hold him and dance to the tune.

7. Massage

Massaging is one of the traditional ways of calming a fussy baby. You can use a baby massage oil to stroke the baby’s chest gently from the centre to outward and make small circles on the stomach and around the belly button. Softly roll or rub his arms and legs between your hands. Rub the fingers and the palms.

Massage each limb in a milking motion and the soles of the feet as well. If your baby finds it soothing, you can try turning him on his tummy and gently stroking the back from side to side and from up and down. We trust that these ways will be helpful to soothe your crying baby.
