What To Expect In Formula Milk Fed Babies?

Team AckoFeb 9, 2024

It is often said that mother’s milk is the best nutritional food a baby can get but formula milk fed babies are the best behaved and seem more content. Every baby is different, but on the whole, formula milk-fed babies tend to grow faster than breastfed babies in their first year. Babies who are breastfed grow rapidly in the first 3 months, but by the time they are a year old, they tend to be leaner than formula-fed babies and about 500g (just over 1lb) lighter. Here are pointers that you should expect in a formula fed baby. This blog is to keep you informed about the same so that you as a parent do not get worried if you see the following results.

What to expect in formula fed babies

Below is a list of what to expect from formula milk fed babies:

Formula fed babies have different poop

If your baby is formula fed then his stool can be totally different from the stool of a breastfed baby. As formula milk usually takes time to digest therefore you may observe that the texture of the poop is bulky and yellowish brown or pale yellow in color. The smell is stronger and somewhat similar to the smell of an adult’s poop. The consistency of the poop is firmer as compared to breastfed babies and is much more comparable to a peanut butter’s consistency.

Babies don’t digest breastmilk and formula milk at the same rate

Formula milk has more protein content therefore it is difficult for your little one to digest the milk. Breastmilk is easier to digest, since formula contains more case your baby takes more time to digest. In formula-fed babies, the unabsorbed portions of minerals can change the balance of bacteria in the gut, which gives harmful bacteria a chance to grow.

Your baby can be allergic to formula

It may be tempting to try a new type of formula milk the minute your munchkin spits up. But spitting up doesn't necessarily signal a problem with what a baby's eating (spit-up happens). You should stay with the same formula milk for at least one week instead of switching it too frequently which can cause digestive issues for your baby. The most common food allergy or sensitivity among babies is to cow’s milk protein, found in most formula milk. Some of the most obvious signs of this sensitivity include a rash, hives, eczema (dry, flaky patches of skin, especially around the forehead), and vomiting.

Formula fed babies sleep pattern is different

If your baby sleeps for longer stretches and wake less frequently at night then this is because of the formula milk as it is filling. For your newborn, staying full for longer stretches may help him sleep for longer period of time. Breastfed babies wake up more often than formula fed ones at night.

Most formula milk is basically the same

Formulas are made by different brands, come in different forms and are even called different names. The nutrients in most formula milks are similar but their sources can be different however it can be confusing when there are so many different brands all making various claims and with different ingredients. All baby formula milks are regulated and have to meet the same legal requirements to support growth and nutrition. For a healthy, full-term baby, it really doesn’t matter which brand you choose because every formula contains basically the same combination of protein, vitamins, fat and minerals which closely mimic that of breastmilk. Always consult a pediatrician before choosing the formula for your baby.

Different babies eat different amounts

Formula portions are not one size fits all. Some babies need more calories than others, and what is sufficient for one child's growth may not be sufficient for your child. In addition, your child's formula intake will vary from meal to meal, just as you may want a light salad for lunch but may crave for a more substantial dinner. Don't be shocked if your baby takes 3 ounces at one feeding and 5 ounces at the next one.Generally speaking if your kiddo is not yet on solids then he should get about 2.5 ounces of formula milk per pound of body weight in every 24-hour period.

Does formula milk make a difference to your baby’s health?

When formula is prepared safely and as directed then it is not going to make any difference to your baby’s health. Your baby will stay healthy and grow well with the formula. Breastfeeding decreases the risk of infections and other illnesses but it is not possible to predict what effect the use of formula milk has on babies. Overall, breastfed babies take in slightly less protein than formula-fed babies in their first year. When prepared as directed, however, infant formula milk supports healthy babies who have typical dietary needs. A baby who has special nutritional needs might require special formula milk. Today’s formula milks are closer to breastmilk than before. Many formula milks offer nutrients that breastfed babies may need to get from supplements, such as vitamin D. Like breastmilk, formula milk can also have the important omega-3 fatty acid DHA.
