Your child now wants more freedom. In this process, he may break rules, test your patience and might be unable to handle his emotions. The emotional turmoil will pave way for him to often misbehave.
Prevention strategy works well, which can be achieved to a great extent when there is lot of structure in his routine. Predictable routine will work the best as he knows what is expected of him next, during the day’s schedule.
Before he enters new situations, tell him in advance what behaviour is expected of him. For instance, if you are going to visit the library, tell him, “You have to maintain silence there as people will be reading. If you have to say something, speak softly.”
Set clear rules and realistic expectations. Be firm and model right behaviour in front of your child.
When rules are not followed, remove privileges. For instance, if he has watched more TV, declare, “NO TV for next day.”
Praise when he behaves well. For instance, if he has taken turns during play, say “You did well taking turns while playing with your friend.”
Avoid spanking, criticising, labelling him. This worsens the situation and affects his self-esteem.
