At this stage, your child can be a little stubborn when you go for shopping, be it for buying merchandise or grocery. Before making the trip to the store, make sure that you have set the expectations right for your child on what she can ask for and what she cannot ask for. Avoid engaging your child in a conversation or reasoning when she gets into a “I want this!" mode. It will only exaggerate the situation.

Having said that, shopping is also a great way of making your child realize the importance of money and how privileged they are in many ways to have some of the best things in life. Doing it at an early age is the best way to start. While you say one cannot have it all, you can also give her the opportunity to earn her own money and have her own shopping done. Good behavior, discipline, helping in household chores, studying hard, etc. are some of the activities she can earn points for herself, which can be converted into money. With this, your child will understand the importance of money and also will be prudent while spending it because it is her hard earned. Not to forget, it also instils a sense of responsibility in the child from an early age.
