Learning Linear Concepts with Blocks

By this age, your child is well aware of basic shapes, like triangle, square, line, circle, etc. Now, the concept of vertical and horizontal line is an interesting thing to learn. Along with this, you can make him learn directions: East, west, north, and south as well. Whether using fingers, a stick in sand or paintbrush-creating straight and circular lines teaching the concepts of right/ left, big/little and top/below is not an easy task. Three to four year old children need to learn these linear concepts in order to correctly form letters.There are many ways to teach vertical and horizontal lines at home. You can use building blocks to make sure your little one gets his linear concepts right. Make the activities fun and lively. Here are few tips to make the learning fun.

1. Ask your child to make a single tower using building blocks. Explain him the concept of straight and tall and connect it with linear lines.

2. Take out the prints of zebra, and ask him to make the horizontal lines of it using blocks.

3. Take out the blocks and build a train using them, explain the concept of horizontal line with the same.

4. Ask him to lift his hands up to form a vertical line and then lift across to make a horizontal line.

5. Make the concept clear in everyday tasks or with day to day objects.
