Falling sick is one of the ways to develop resistance. While it is essential to give medicines for some of the illness, natural remedies are always better to get relief and build resistance in the body. The remedies rarely have side effects. As children grow, their immune system strengthens and they build up immunity to ward off common infections.
Honey is found to have healing effect for sore throat. Lemon dries up the congestion. A spoonful of honey provides relief from cough better than cough syrup. Mix together a teaspoon of honey and lemon and microwave it until warm. Make your kid swallow a teaspoon of mixture at a time. Please do remember though that honey is not safe for babies under 1 year. For small babies, breastfeeding and steam are the best options .
Garlic has many healing properties. These properties help to protect the immune system against common cold. Garlic can also be boiled along with milk. You can give the milk to your baby, it helps to clear the cold. Garlic also helps to treat colic in babies. It should not be given raw as it can burn the baby's tongue. Breastfeeding mothers can include garlic in their diet to ease colic in their babies.
If your child has a runny or stuffed up nose, eating pepper with a meal, gargling pepper in hot water, or even simply smelling pepper can help break apart any congestion in your child͛'s lungs or sinuses. Pepper can help break up congestion effectively thanks to its capsaicin components, which are known to thin mucus, and they are also effective in helping getting rid of the germs in the nasal passages as well. Having soup with proper helps to relive congestion.
Turmeric also has many healing properties. It helps to relieve cough and cold and can also be applied on wounds. Hot milk with turmeric and honey is soothing for a sore throat.
Increasing vitamin-C in your child's body helps to build resistance against cold and cough . Vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and tomatoes, and fruits like oranges, strawberries, peaches, and kiwis are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C can be given in the form of drops as well.
Asafoetida is another natural remedy for relieving colic in babies. Add a pinch of asafoetida to warm water and make your child drink the same. Do not add more than this. It can also be rubbed on the tummy. It can also be used to cure tooth ache as well. Fry a pinch of asafoetida along with clarified butter. Use a cotton swab and apply this mixture on the affected part of your child͛s tooth.
Ginger is a good treatment for asthma. Its anti-inflammatory property helps reduce airway inflammation and inhibits airway contraction. Mix together equal amounts of ginger juice, pomegranate juice, and honey. Give your child one tea spoon of this mixture three times a day.
Earache is another common problem faced by children. They are caused due to ear infection or cold or accumulation of wax. Your child will have dull pain or sharp pain in the ears. Olive oil is a good remedy. It works as a lubricant and helps to get rid of ear infection. Put three to four drops of warm olive oil in your child's ears. This helps to soften the wax. The wax can be removed with cotton swabs. Make sure you do not put the swabs deep inside the ears.
Almost all children suffer from stomach aches at one time or another. They can be due to constipation, indigestion, gas, acid reflux, stomach flu, food poisoning, overeating, colic and swallowing air. Fennel seeds are a good way to help relieve indigestion.
-Add 1 teaspoon of crushed fennel seeds to 1 cup of hot water and steep for 10 minutes. -Strain, add a little honey and have your child drink it slowly 2 times a day.
You can also give your child a small amount of roasted fennel seeds to chew after a meal. Also, give your child warm water to drink at regular intervals while experiencing a stomach ache. This will help expel gas and also prevent constipation.
These are some of the home remedies you can try. Apart from this, there are also other remedies like coconut oil for wounds, bananas for diarrhea, and cinnamon can be used for treating bed wetting and aloe vera can be used for skin rashes.
Additionally, maintain hygiene at home, make your child wash his hands frequently. Make sure your toddler doesn͛'t stuff his fingers in his mouth. Your little one should also get good sleep. Though you can try these home remedies, if any of the symptoms worsen or if your child has fever or pain or is feeling uncomfortable, consult his doctor immediately. Take him for regular checkups to the doctor and make sure he is up to date with his vaccines.
