Point To Remember When Assigning Tasks To your Child

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

By assigning tasks to kids, we make them learn responsibility. Kids not only learn responsibility by completing the tasks, they also learn about an attitude, idea of taking the action and being proud of doing it. They also don’t feel that always mum or dad will do it for them. Here's what you need to remember while assigning any task to your kid:

    1. Before assigning any tasks, first thing to remember is, he is capable of doing the task.

    2. Start assigning simpler and smaller tasks from the early age.

    3. Let them help you in completing your tasks and not wholly doing it by themselves.

    4. Respect the little one - While asking them to complete a task, respect them and assign in a soft tone. Smile and invite him to help you. He will take this good feelings and learn to take ownership of his house and he feels the pride in maintaining it.

    5. Show him the way - You have to work with them at their level. First you can demonstrate how to complete the small tasks and ask them to do it the same way.

    6. Model responsibility - Make responsibilities age-appropriate. While informing them about tasks, you have to except him to complete on his own without any dependency. ex: once he is done with his meal, ask him to put it in the sink. This should be continue overtime he completes his meal.

    7. Praise the child - Kids love to help. To kids chores don’t feel like work. Keep up the positive vibes by offering them praises. ex: ask them to place their clothes in cupboard, once done, say ''You placed it neatly, I’m proud of you.'

    8. Your expectations should not be high - When you have assigned a task and its half done, do not criticize. Recognise a job which is well done. When its half done, complete it by yourself and stay that the task is done now.

    9. Avoid Rewards - Don’t reward your kid for tasks. He should not assume a reward system has to be in place for them to learn completing the tasks. Save rewards for tasks that go above and beyond what you expect to be child’s normal tasks.

    10. Teach consequences - Learning to take care of the tasks also helps to develop the sense of responsibilities. Example: Ask the kid to color the page of the colouring book, once he’s done, ask him to clean the table if any crayons dirt is present.

    11. Don't be afraid to assign a task - Parents are usually afraid to let kids suffer, be sad, or occupied or angry. But as a parent you need to allow the kid to solve their own problems, otherwise they will not learn to be responsible after the grow up.

Assigning the kid tasks and getting it completed is not easy, its part of parenting. It can take years and lots of patience. Follow these tips and you stand a better chance of raising a responsible kid who will then grows into a responsible adult.
