At this age it is apt to begin with illustrations and word meanings. Ask your kid the meaning of the words they read. Next time a word is repeated in the story, ask them to relate it to the previous instance. In this way you can ensure that the word finds a way into his day-to-day terminology.

Help your kid make a vocabulary notebook where he can note down any new words he comes across, along with their meanings. Refer to this from time to time, and practise using the new words in your everyday conversation.
