Teach Your Kid The Art Of Refusing Politely "No, Thank You"

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Your child at this age must learn to express his displeasure or rejection politely. At the same time you must also realize the importance of expressing these emotions courteously.

    1. Start with the basics: Let your kid be exposed to the terms, “Thank you”, “Please” and “Sorry”. You can practise these words by singing the song, ‘These are the 3 little magic words that can open any door with ease’.

    2. Lead by example: Role model by making sure you say ‘No, thank you’ politely when appropriate. Saying just a plain ‘no’ sometimes can appear to be rude but adding a ‘thank you’ to the rejection will make it sound more polite. Teach your child the difference of using ‘no’ and ‘no, thank you’ by demonstrating this at home or wherever your child is, with you. Your child will follow your mannerism.

    3. The tone and the body language of saying ‘No’: Teach to use a courteous tone and pleasing body language when he wants to express his rejection.

    4. ‘Yes please’ activity: You can inculcate polite mannerism through a fun-filled activity. Take 10 paper plates. Stick some 5 pictures of favourite dishes of your child on the paper plates and some 5 other dishes. Offer the plates one by one and let your child say ‘yes please’ for his favourite dish and ‘no thank you’ for other dishes.

    5. Other words for polite rejection: You can also familiarise your child to use the words ‘sorry, I don’t want’ for refusal and enrich his vocabulary.
