Boosting your child's self-confidence is essential for his development. A positive attitude is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child and raise his self-esteem. Self-esteem is about liking yourself and who you are and accepting your shortcomings. Children with high self-esteem feel loved and competent. They develop into happy and productive people.

Some effective ways to boost your child’s self-confidence and self-esteem:

Following these will not only give your child's personality a much needed boost but also make your little one more courageous at dealing with things in life, including the challenges that come their way in the future.

Deciding power

Give your little one choices within the reasonable set of options which you can select beforehand. Let him choose one and decide which is the best. He will feel empowered. For snacks, you can ask him if he would like to eat banana, apple or grapes, you can ask him to choose what he wants to wear — red, blue or a black t-shirt. This training to make simple choices will prepare him for the future when he has to face the world and make more difficult choices.

Make your child independent

Don’t do everything for your child, let him do small things on his own. Be patient, teach him and watch how he works. It may be faster and less messy to feed your child but letting him feed himself will help him learn new skills and take care of himself. The more he meets new challenges, the more competent and confident he’ll feel.

Practice makes man perfect

Tell him that no one is perfect in this world, the only key is to practice and get better day after day. Make him realize that it is okay not to be perfect, you can try and learn again.

No melodrama

Your reaction to achievements or mistakes of your child should not be melodramatic. Never over react. Praise him for small efforts and gift kisses and hugs on mistakes. Don’t show your disappointments, ask him to work hard to do better the next time. Kids can sense sincere praises so be specific and mind your words. When you are angry, take a short break. Remember, you can dislike your child’s actions but not your child.

Assign age-appropriate jobs

Give your child tasks that he can do easily, like, dress a doll, put toys in the box or bring the book, etc. This will increase his confidence and competency. By doing this, your child will be more into problem-solving skills.

Never compare

You have to remember that every child is unique and grows differently with different skills, so never compare your child with other’s kids. Rather appreciate each one’s individuality and special gifts. For example, your neighbor’s son of the same age might be able to button his shirt and your kid is able to color within the boundary, there is no comparison for the two skills.

Personal time

Spend one-on-one time with your child. Whether it is a meal time, walk to a park or bed time, try to spare some time alone with your child at least twice or thrice a week. Talk to him about his feelings, what is going on in his mind, answer his queries. This precious time will help you to strengthen the bond between the two of you.
