Have these questions crossed your mind lately?
Sometimes, it is hard to understand whether your child is intellectually or naturally gifted. As a new mother, I was anxious too — whether my baby will grow to be fine, whether she will be talented and what not. And when she was just a little over 3 months, I found her tapping feet to a popular Bollywood number! And I realised that she was dancing.
Three years hence, I have a tough time keeping my daughter intellectually stimulated. Rapid learning and high alertness even as an infant are signs of a naturally gifted child.
Your child is naturally gifted if she demonstrates outstanding ability to learn or reason or perform in any subject. The subject could be any structured domain like mathematics, language, or music.
She may also have outstanding sensorimotor skills, which mean she would be extremely good at something like painting or dance or sports.
Gifted child finds it easy to understand a complex topic. When I started teaching my kid how to write — I just helped her initially. Later on, she started copying alphabets on her own. She also reasons things out and draws logical conclusions.
Gifted children have a large vocabulary for their age. They may start speaking in coherent sentences early on. They retell the stories you told them and may even create their own.
A gifted child requires very less discipline outside. They just know how to behave where. They show resourcefulness too. Has your three-year-old started dragging stools to reach out to that chocolate box yet?
A sharp memory is another of their forte. They display flexible thinking patterns. They are naturally curious and alert. They may also be very creative.
As a parent, you should nurture your child’s inquisitiveness. Ask questions that make her think through and voice her opinion.
Encourage her curiosity. Take the classroom learning outside with practical like a dam or a windmill for power generation.
And finally, read to her; as much as you can. One-on-one reading can really do wonders and help your child absorb content from all areas.
