Are your breasts leaking some colostrum (premilk)?

As your body continues to prepare for motherhood, you are probably observing that your breasts now look and feel nothing like they did 31 weeks ago. You may have noticed a yellowish or creamy substance leaking from your breasts at times. This substance is called colostrum or pre-milk.

Colostrum is the first stage of breast milk production that occurs during pregnancy and lasts for several days after the birth of your baby. This yellow liquid will nourish your little one during the first few days after his birth. It is full of antibodies and protein, and will boost your baby's immune system and help him or her resist infections that can occur after birth. Don’t worry if you don’t see any colostrum – your breasts are still producing it, even if you can’t see it.

You may notice that the leaking only occurs at certain times of the day. If you experience leaking at random times, try using nursing pads that can be tucked in your bra to absorb the colostrum. You should also get some new bras that offer additional support during this time. Once you give birth, your breasts will naturally stop producing colostrum after a few days, and start producing thicker breastmilk.
