Once the fertilized egg reaches the uterus, it attaches itself to the endometrium, the lining of the uterus. This is called implantation. Pregnancy is confirmed now. About one-third women will experience some bleeding when implantation occurs.

Implantation stimulates your body to produce the pregnancy hormone, hCG(Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) which can be found in your blood now. hCG is made by cells, which are going to be the placenta. Your doctor will recommend a blood test to confirm its presence and your pregnancy. It is also found in the urine and hence, the home pregnancy test will give you the result too. The hCG level has to be more than 25U/L for a positive pregnancy test.
hCG tests are very sensitive. For a positive pregnancy diagnosis to be made, the smallest concentration of hCG is enough. After conception, as early as 9-12 days, hCG can be detected in the blood while within 12- 15 days, in the urine.
hCG will, in turn, prompt the release of progesterone and estrogen, two more hormones, which are needed for the sustenance of pregnancy. The function of hCG is to nourish the zygote and support it till the placenta is mature enough to take over this function. hCG also signals no period as the thickened lining of the womb is essential to nurture the growing fetus.
In the early pregnancy, hCG levels double every 3 days. The levels are highest between 8 to 10 weeks. After that, the levels begin to decline. This is one reason why the morning sickness symptoms are highest during the first trimester and you start to feel better in the second trimester. As the pregnancy advances, low consistent levels of hCG are observed.
