Should you reveal your pregnancy at work?

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

If you are a working would-be mother, you may be wondering how to tell your boss about the pregnancy. Nervousness, being judged by others, what would be the benefits and rights are few concerns bothering you.

Firstly, do your homework. Find out about HR policies regarding maternity leave, benefits, your rights, and also, other company policies once you return to work from the company’s website. You can also talk to a friendly mom from the company itself who is well aware of the policies.

Most importantly, don’t be nervous. Yes, it's easier said than done and you may feel people will judge you like not being committed to your job/career or you would be given less responsibilities on account of pregnancy. Despite all that, it is very important to remember that what your colleagues or boss think is their opinion, which is not in your control. Communicate the news confidently even though you may feel just the opposite.

Always convey the news first to your boss. If he gets to know about the news from someone else at workplace, it will be very awkward for them to ask you about the news. The timing of conveying the news is very important. Ideally, it should be after the first trimester when the chances of miscarriage are low. However, you may wait for some time in case you are on nearing completion of a project, finalizing a deal, or awaiting an upcoming performance appraisal.

But don’t wait too long. While communicating the news, let it be brief and do it in person. Once the news is conveyed, you will see your boss' immediate reaction on their attitude towards working moms, your ability to negotiate maternity leave, etc.

In case you are working from home, schedule a time with your boss and talk to him over the phone just like you would do in person.

Work on how and when you would plan to finish the present assignments/projects. Your boss would also want you to train and delegate the work to your colleague/junior who would be managing in your absence. However, this meeting would take more time and you can schedule it after a few days. A mention of this in brief to your boss in the first meeting itself will be helpful to decide how to streamline the work.
