Fully developed lungs are one of the key factors for life outside the mother’s womb. The other parts of the baby’s body are functioning quite early but for the development of lungs, its day-to-day functioning is quite important. Each day is important for the development of the lungs. Babies who are at risk of being born prematurely, doctors in such cases focus mainly on ensuring that the lungs are developed as much as possible before the arrival of the baby, as that leads to more chances of the survival of the child.

There are mainly 5 stages of lungs development after the embryo stage, a baby's lungs develop in the pseudoglandular stage. This stage lasts from about 5 weeks to 17 weeks gestation and here the baby's lungs can be compared to a tree trunk with branches sprouting from it.

As the baby grows, the "branches" become more involved and complex. The consequent stage occurs in phases, from 26-36 weeks, and the last stage of lung development doesn't even begin until 36 weeks.

There is actually a tremendous amount of growth that happens in that last stage of lung development since it then prepares itself to function outside of the womb. The lungs are unique in that they are one the only systems in the body that stay primarily dormant until birth. After the embryo stage, a baby's lungs develop in what's called the pseudoglandular stage.

During this stage, which lasts from about 5 weeks to 17 weeks gestation, the baby's lungs can be compared to a tree trunk with branches sprouting from it. As the baby grows, the "branches" become more involved and complex.
