Tip of the week: Should you be concerned if you experience some spotting?

Team AckoFeb 8, 2024

Early in pregnancy, some spotting is normal but if it results in pain or the flow is not normal then you need to see your doctor immediately. Heavy bleeding could be a sign of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is a stage where the embryo implants itself outside the lining of the uterus in the fallopian tubes and this pregnancy is not safe for the mother. Certain infections and abruption of the placenta can also cause vaginal bleeding that is a serious sign during pregnancy.

Apart from bleeding, there are other signs as well that you should not ignore during the first trimester of your pregnancy. Signs like excessive nausea and vomiting will dehydrate you and you will not be able to eat or drink anything properly. Bleeding can occur due to certain reasons like implantation of the egg in the uterus. The color of the spotting is also very important, if it is bright red then you need to worry and see your doctor immediately for assistance.

Bleeding can also occur due to preterm labor and then your doctor will suggest you take bed rest or give some medication to stop it. Sometimes, sexual intercourse during pregnancy also causes vaginal bleeding that is why doctors suggest enjoying sex during the second or third trimester. Any kind of vaginal test done by the doctor can also trigger bleeding during the first trimester but that is normal and it stops then and there. Never use a tampon to stop the bleeding and keep an account of how much amount of vaginal bleeding was there so that you can tell your doctor about it.
