Mitha Dali

Mitha Dali is a sweet lentil prepared from chana dal and masoor dal along with coconut, ghee, and jaggery. It is offered to Lord Jagannath of Puri. This dal is rich in iron, protein, and calcium and is perfect to serve along with sweet khichdi.

    Ingredients to make Mitha Dali:

    1 cup chanan dal, ½ cup red masoor dal, 1 tbsp turmeric powder, salt to taste, 1 tbsp jaggery, 1 tsp ginger, 1 tsp coriander seeds, 1 tsp cumin seeds, ½ tsp fenugreek seeds, ½ tsp fennel seeds, 1 tsp ground black pepper, ½ tsp cardamom powder, ½ cup grated coconut, 2 cinnamon stick, 1 tbsp ghee, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp fennel seeds

    Steps to make Mitha Dali:

    1. Wash and soak lentils in water for about 15-20 minutes

    2. Take a grinder and make coarse paste of coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds, black pepper, cardamom, coconut and cinnamom.

    3. Bring a boil to water(approx a litre). Add turmeric, salt, and jaggery, the soaked dals and the paste. Simmer on low heat till the dal is tender.

    4. In a pan, prepare tempering. Heat ghee; add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and fennel seeds. Pour this tempering over the dal

    Serve hot with rice.
