Moong Dal Payasam

This is the most auspicious offering that is made to the God in South India during their festivities. This is highly tasty and nutritious as it is made from sweetened moong dal and jaggery. With added coconut it becomes a sweet treat for the taste buds.

    Ingredients to make Moong Dal Payasam:

    1½ cup yellow moong dal, 1½ cup jaggery, 2 cups grated coconut, ½ tsp cardamom powder, 1/4 tsp dried ginger powder, 2 tbsp ghee, 1 tbsp chopped coconut, 1 tbsp broken cashewnuts, 1 tbsp raisins

    Steps to make Moong Dal Payasam:

    1. Take a pan and add moong dal in it. Dry roast the dal for 3 minutes on medium flame till it becomes light brown in colour.

    2. Keep the dal in a strainer and then wash it well under water.

    3. Now pressure cook the dal by adding 2 cups of water and cook for 5 whistles.

    4. Keep the dal aside once it is cooked.

    5. Take a pan and add cooked dal, jaggery and cook them for 5 minutes on medium heat

    6. Add grated coconut and mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes. Also add cardamom powder and ginger powder and cook for another 2 minutes on medium flame

    7. Heat some ghee in a pan and add coconut pieces, broken cashews and raisins. Cook them for 2 minutes and then add this as a tempering on the prepared moong dal mixture.

    Serve it warm.
