1-2 drumsticks peeled, ½ cup toor dal,1 medium sized tomato, ½ medium sized onion, 1 sprig cumin seeds/jeera, 2 dry red chiles, 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp jeera, a pinch asafoetida, ½ tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder, 2 tsp oil, coriander leaves for garnishing, salt to taste
1. Cut the drumsticks into 2 inch sized pieces and boil them by adding 2 cups water. Keep it aside.
2. Clean and wash the toor dal and keep aside for 30-45 minutes.
3. Add finely chopped onion, tomatoes and toor dal along with 2 cups water and pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles or till dal is cooked.
4. Heat a kadai and add oil. Then add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
5. Then add cumin seeds, asafeotida, dry red chillies and curry leaves and fry for few 2 minutes.
6. Add chopped garlic and sauté till raw smell of garlic goes away.
7. Add turmeric powder and red chilli powder and mix well. Finally add dal from the pressure cooker and mix.
8. Also take the boiled drumsticks and add them to the cooked dal and simmer for 5 minutes on low heat.
9. Add salt to taste and garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot with rice or phulkas.
