This is a very nutritious dal that is rich in iron and protein and tastes delicious as well. It tastes good with parantha or tandoori roti. Give a tadka of ghee and red chili powder and it will enhance its taste even more.

1 small cup urad dal, 1 chopped onion, 2 green chilli, 5-6 curry leaves, 1 cup grated coconut, 1 chopped tomato, few leaves of chopped cilantro, 1 inch ginger, oil for cooking, 3 small cups water, salt to taste, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp chili powder, five spices, ½ tsp cumin seeds
1. Soak the urad dal in some water for half an hour.
2. Combine tomato, ginger and green chilli in a blender and make a smooth paste.
3. Transfer urad dal to the pressure cook and add salt and turmeric powder along with 3 cups of water.
4. Pressure cook the dal for 1 whistle over the high flame and then let it cook for 7-8 minutes on low flame.
5. When the steam is released then open the lid of the cooker.
6. Take a kadhai and heat it on the gas. Add some ghee or oil into it.
7. Now add hing and chopped onion and fry onions till they turn golden brown in color.
8. Add red chili, turmeric, cumin seeds, and black pepper powder to the onion mixture and saute for a few seconds.
9. Add tomato paste and cook on medium flame for 2-3 minutes.
10. Add cooked urad dal to the mixture and saute for few minutes.
11. Now add coconut to it and let it cook for another 5 minutes on medium flame.
Pour desi ghee tempering on the dal once it is cooked and serve hot.
