Varanfal

Varanfal (or Waranphal) is a traditional Maharashtrian dish made up of pieces of dough cooked in the curry of toor dal. It is often served with ghee and is a filling dish rich in protein and calories!

    Ingredients to make Varanfal:

    Wheat flour, ajwain, salt, oil, mustard seeds, turmeric powder, coriander poweder, toor dal, kokum extract, water, ghee, onions, coriander leaves

    Steps to make Varanfal:

    1. To begin with the recipe, in a bowl, mix wheat flour, salt, ajwain, oil and make a stiff dough.

    2. Then in a pressure cooker cook toor dal with garlic for 3-4 whistles.

    3. After the dal is done mash it well and a separate pan heat oil.

    4. Add mustard seeds, after they splutter add turmeric, coriander powder and sprinkle some water.

    5. Add this tempering to the mashed dal with this add the kokum extract and 2-3 cups of water to make it slurry

    6. Boil the dal for few minutes in low heat.

    7. Till then divide the dough into equal parts and roll it on a rolling board.

    8. Give horizontal and vertical cuts to make square or diamond shapes . keep the square cuts on a plate . Do this for all divided dough.

    9. Once the dal starts boiling slide on the prepared square cuts in the dal.

    10. Cook in the dal for 15 mins in medium flame or till they are cooked.

    Once they are cooked, serve them hot with ghee simmered and garnished with coriander leaves and some chopped onions.
