Kalan is a spicy and curd based gravy that is very popular in Kerala and is the base of almost all the curry foods in Kerela. This goes perfectly with rice and roti and with little effort you can master this dish in few hours.

2 cups grated coconut, 1 cup sour curd, 2 green chiles, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1½ cup chopped yam, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp pepper powder, salt to taste, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 1 tsp mustard seeds, ½ tsp fenugreek leaves, 1 whole dry red Kashmiri chili, 5-6 curry leaves
1.Take yam, turmeric powder, pepper, salt, and 1 cup of water. Mix them well and cook on medium flame for 10-15 minutes.
2. Add the prepared paste of grated coconut, sour curd, green chilies and cumin seeds.
3. Simmer for 5 minutes on medium flame. Remove from the flame and keep aside.
4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, curry leaves, fenugreek seeds and red chilli.
5. Pour this tempering over the curry and mix well.
Serve hot with rice or roti.
