For the maintenance of smooth roads and building a well-connected network, the Chhattisgarh government levies road tax on all private and commercial vehicles depending on the type of vehicle. The Chhattisgarh road taxis levied as per The Chhattisgarh Motoryan Karadhan Adhiniyam, 1991.
It is a major source of revenue for the state government. The road tax in Chhattisgarh is a mandatory one-time payment, and the non-payment of tax can result in heavy fines that can go up to 8% of the due amount.

Commercial vehicles do not fall under any specific tax bracket. The tax amount is calculated on a ‘per-seat, per-quarter’ basis, at Rs. 150 per seat per quarter.
For vehicles with an all-India permit, the road tax increases to Rs. 200 per seat per quarter.

You can pay the Chhattisgarh road tax both online and offline.
To complete the offline payment, you can visit any nearby district RTO offices operating in the state. After approaching the office, fill up the application form and submit all the required documents. You will receive a challan after paying the dues, which should be saved for future reference.
Follow the steps mentioned below to pay the Chhattisgarh road tax online:
Step 1: Visit the official website of the Chhattisgarh Transport Department.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Vahan Services’ section and choose the ‘Online Payment’ option.
Step 3: The website redirects you to another page.
Step 4: Access your account details by entering your application number and password.
Step 5: Select one of the available payment options (net banking or debit card) to pay your Chhattisgarh road tax online.
Step 6: With this, your online road tax payment is complete. You can now drive your vehicle in the state without any worries!
It is always recommended to make timely payment of Chhattisgarh road tax for your vehicle. If you fail to do so, you will be liable to pay a fine amounting to 1/12th of your tax amount, in addition to the road tax amount due.

No tax is levied on motor vehicles used or kept by a Municipal Council, Municipal Corporation, Cantonment Board, Special Area Development Authority, or Notified Area Committee for use as an ambulance or fire extinguisher. Further, no tax is levied on motor vehicles owned by the State Government or kept for agriculture.
Road taxes should be paid in advance by the owner of the vehicle. It can be paid quarterly, half-yearly or annually. However, the payment must be made within 15 days from the commencement of the quarter, half year or full year, as the case may be.
